single-handedly obliterated a Taskforce..

Well..another nice AI goofup..

I was traveling near Scotland when I encountered an escort carrier (bogue) taskforce, concisting of the carrier and 5 DD's.
I messed up and got spotted by the nearest DD, wich turned into my direction. I expected to be totaly wasted by all of them but to my surprise only the one that spotted my came after me.

1 DD, no problem, I turned into him and fired a torp headon, (didn't made evasive manouvres  ) wich blew him out of the water.
Still no reaction from the other DD's.. I surfaced and got again spotted (radar I presume) by another DD. And again only one came after me so I shot that one as well..and the next, and the next.

You can imagine the rest, I picked them off one by one and to top it all off the Carrier hadn't speeded away but was slowly zigzagging. :shifty: :damn: geez.
Ofcourse I intercepted the lonely Carrier and torped him, I almost feel quilty about it..

Why the hell didn't the DD's atacked as a group? They could have ruined my day. And I thought the patch eliminated the straight course of the DD's? (Only one of the DD zigzagged in this case.)

I have to admit this is curious behaviour. Most unlike convoy task force escorts which show supprisingly intellegint behavior with sprint / drifts and hunter / watchers.

I suppose they are coded differently.

I tried to prosecute a TF once and got my butt handed to me royaly (pun intended). Since then Ive been very weary of TF's. Usually playing chicken excrament and clearing out.

BTW you dident mention what mods you have applied.

Oh yeah, I use the latest Rub with the improved convoys mod. Convoys seem to act OK but it's the TF that act up. In 2 out of 3 TF encounters I could snatch BB's and carriers and leave unharmed. Sure the DD's would break formation but that's it, no pinging or DC'ing.. Not something you would expect to see from a BB/Carrier group.

These looked like DEs, though. ;) Not that it matters any as to the lack of prosecution, but not quite the menace of DDs.

Sir, the crew has elected me to bring their grievances before you... specifically the fact that you are claiming that you "singlehandedly" sunk that task force, when in fact:

1. WE spotted the ships!

2. WE loaded the torpedo tubes!

3. WE cooked the sausage and potatoes for the celebration dinner afterwards!

We simply ask for credit where it is due, Kaleun.

Should'nt that read:
1. [/i]WO spotted the ships!

:hmm:

Poor bastards :rotfl: :rotfl: a lone carrier zigzaging desesperately.

I play the stock mission u-505, that i thought that could be too difficult but i was very easy.

After a little deep run at 100 m i launched two electric torps to the carrier that sinks very kick , with two bow impacts  after i returned to the deeps scaping with no pings or depth charges :sunny: the destroyers stay in the sink site circling looking for a subs. but i was going away at silent running :rotfl:

could be that something or a mod is making the missions easy ?? :hmm:

Takao 11-04-05 05:22 PM

No it is not any mod that caused it. I had the same thing happen to me in March 44 with a vanilla copy patched to 1.4b. Three River DEs, one Tribal DD, and a VW DD, and the Bogue all went to Davy Jone's Locker in much the same way described. The attacks came as single, single, double, single, and finally chased down the carrier. The double attack was because two escorts picked me up on radar at the same time.

With destroyers attacks using a radar contact as its basis, the destroyers will charge straight to the general area of the contact and then proceed to search.

Jungman 11-05-05 12:58 AM

Just picking up from a related thread where this was started. I notice that if you sink a ship then all the destroyers within 25 km are suppose to come running to its aid.

Others, including me , is noticing something fishy going on with the DD behaviour. It would seem only the one that spotted you will even bother come look for you.

In U-505 mission, I sank the carrier, then they all came to where I was sort of to hunt for me. This is a problem. I thought the AI would alert all the nearby DD to come look for you, instead of the one with its own sensor range.

You actually have to work at it to get killed?? What has changed?

Sometimes they gange up, but mostly as you say and others, they do not seem to understand to call in their buddies for help to look for you.

I do propose a fix, but I need to test it. It should cause any DD within its sensor range to come look for you after an attack. But it is only a guess, so I will let you know what I can find. It bugs me, since I also notice this poor co-ordination in these hunter killer TF while watching dozens of DC attacks developing a better damage/repair model using the U-505 mission as a test.

You almost have to surface and say "Hello, Look at me!" over here.

@ ICBM

How did you get your baterry, fuel, air guage to fit there in that small area? Is that a mod? Thanks.

Takao 11-05-05 04:39 AM

Jungman,

It seems to work differently for single merchants vs. convoys & warships or maybe its roving DD on patrol vs. DD acting as escort???. I have had DDs appear out of nowhere (ie. not deteced on my sonar) moving at flank speed to where I had sunk a single merchant 3-10 minutes before. But, with convoys and Task Forces only one or two seem to want to hunt while the rest maintain station.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, while stalking the Bogue the escorts came in singularly and without coordination.

Another experience I had had on a previous patrol. I was leaving the Straight of Gibralter headed West. I had avoided the roving patrols in the Straight and a 3 DD patrol group at the enterance to the Straight. I thought I was home free when a single DD picked me up on hydrophones(must have been an Elite, I was submerged at 3kts on silent running). I went deep to avoid his first attacks, but dosen't the hydrophone operator inform me of 3 mor warships closing fast at long range. GREAT, he brought his buddies! So I go deeper. Now I have four on top of me! Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, it did. Four more new contacts detected coming out of the Straight at high speed! Eight frigging warships and I'm the target. I peeked with the external camera, 6 DD/DEs and 2 PT boats. I lasted 15 minutes...Swung away from one DD into the path of another. It was a perfect depth charge pattern, one exploded right alongside my boat. Instant death.

Another instance of similar vein. I made a convoy attack and sank two merchants in the convoy. There were 4 escorts and two turned to hunt for me while the other two maintained there stations. Now I get a report of another destroyer closing fast at long range. He must have been a single on patrol and came looking for me.

So, it would seem that the free roving patrols will come to aid any contact, while those on escort duty are restricted in when to attack.

Again, all took place on a vanilla 1.4b

Jungman 11-05-05 08:42 AM

I wonder if they are sticking to over realism. I read where if a convoy is attacked, there was no waiting up for the damaged merchant ship out of fear for more merchants being sunk. They left them behind and the convoy kept moving fast along no waiting. Could that be is what they programmed?
