I just got my brand - spankin' new copy of the U-Boat Commander's Handbook from Amazon.com, and it got me thinking:

I wonder what the heck those people at Amazon are thinking when each new order for the U-Boat Commander's Handbook comes in????? :hmm:

Well, I'm sure there are many more contovertial materials out there. I don't think seeing the U-boat Commander's Handbook is very strange at all.

I wasn't thinking of it as a controversial order, more along the lines of "Why are all these people buying a book from 1943 that wouldn't have any value in 2005???" kind thing.....

Unless some of them are sub-simmers, of course......

It’s a historical book, lots of people order older historical books.

I don't see that the Amazon people think much one way or another about either the contents of the books that they sell, or the mechanism of how they sell their books. I believe that they just do what their central computer tells them to do, at least that was the impression I got from e-mailing their customer service.

They don't care for one reason: we are giving them wads of cash for a cheap compilation of bound paper. It's called Capitalism my friends. :up:

I can see a the funny side of it though, imagine an amazon employee when her husband says, "I've got a surprise for you, I've booked a nice cruise for our anniversary."
Her reply, "NO WAY, YOUR NOT GETTING ME ON A SHIP, I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE, THEY ARE PLANNING ANOTHER ATTACK."

And what's wrong with capitalism? You get what you pay for. You want it, you hand out some dollars, you don't want it, you keep your money. Nothing wrong with that. At some point, someone spent a massive amount of time putting that book together, so you can't expect to get it for free.

I had to order a copy of Mein Kampf and the girl at the book store didn't bat an eye. Of course I'm not sure the girl at the book store even knew who wrote the book. For that matter I'm really not sure if the girl at the book store could even read?!?!

I have it, but just thumbed through it. I would LOVE to have sets of manuals from various WW1 and WW2 militaries. Think how cool a battleship commanders manual would be :) I doubt such a beast exists (now or then), but I'm sure there are ones for tankers, destroyer captains, and fighter pilots.

My uncle was able to recieve a copy of a Bristol Beaufighter Pilot's Manual from the RAF in 2003. Speak to the military authorities that operated a piece of machinery you may be interested in... you would be surprised what they still have on file.

I`m sure they don`t care, I mean I bought (in one order) eight books on military sniping, costums didn`t care either.

Though the look on the face of my roommate who is a pasifist was kind of priceless :D

Some time ago I found a website where you can buy US-Navy manuals from WWII in pdf format.

Theres also a free version of the Fleetsub manual from 1946.

Looks like the real literature for a UBoat skipper to skim through while on patrol. I am tempted but it isn't cheap.
