deck gun aiming problem
Anybody notice that sometimes the deckgun zoomed-aiming is offset from the true deckgun aim, laterally? Like, if you are aimed center, the shell flies systematically left or right?
Any fix? KB |

I believe its caused by "fatique" and/or foul weather (wx)
Also-- If you have a qualified gunner, you'll be able to put the cross-hairs on target. ...one more thing... make sure the muzzel is down before firing otherwise your round will overshoot or hit high even though you're on target. There is a bounce effect built-in. You must compensate for it. |
Sea state (external weapon traverse thru X,Y and Z ---pitch, roll and yaw---axises), shell spin (like a golf hook or slice--depending on internal rifleing---also dependent on rifleing wear), distance to the target, wind speed and direction, humidity and target aspect/speed/distance/course...as well as your own... (not to mention shell throw weight, atmospheric friction, exclusive of humidity, and, powder load/quality/consistancy) effect initial aim point as well. Not sure how sophisticated the deck gun model is...but each of those factors play a part in real life. Given that...aim for where the target will be when the round arrives...not where he is when you squeeze the trigger (lead or lag...depending). That may solve at least a part of the problem. Same things, in general, Michael Jordon caculated when (as) he shot a running three-pointer in the NBA.

before manning the Gun check in the UZO Distance and speed, addjust the gun in the UZO Distance and make corrections according to the movement and speed of the Target (in or Decrease Distance) Fire 1 shell with the crosshair exact on the target and observe where the shell is landing make corrections according to the first shell and you'll hit the target. If you attack on long distance small corrections have much greater effect and for the targeting (left / right) i use the Mouse is more precise as the Left/Right Keys

guys - thanks for the gunning tips, but I'm pretty sure I've got a bug here. The sight becomes offset by a _certain_ amount. It's not random variation due to these other factors. I know the bounce - it's not a Y offset I'm describing - an X offset and a constant. And, I've found that if you start working over open sights, the offset isn't there so it's specific to the aiming sight. I'm pretty sure the bug is linked to TC, because I have been going to 8x to get the thing reloaded faster and this seems to add to the offset. I can compensate for the offset (perfectly)...it's just annoying.

Are you sure that you aren't describing a bit of inaccuracy which may be purposefully modelled by SH3?

And even if it is a bug, it's not like a real 88' would be super accurate... Would it?

doubtful that this is on purpose...can't think of any natural reason that aim would develop a progressive and consistent x offset...

Well, don't know if this helps, but after I hit something during a patrol, the deckgun is never right for the rest of the mission. It always fires completely to the right or left of where I'm aiming, regardless of sea conditions. It's like the boat is still rocking from the collision with another ship, long after it's over but it's not moving on the external. Not sure what that's about. :doh:

Got the same thing here too :hmm: she'll shoot to the port or starbord??????? but never too high or low (of aim point).

I seem to get the lateral offset from time to time also and I can't see any pattern in its occurence. The workaround is easy though, like any gun where the sights are out and you can't adjust them - compensate. Aim right or left depending on how far the sight is out. That's what I've been doing anyway and happily blowing things out of the water :D
