Torpedo Detonates in U-boat

:) A short time ago I hosted a historical mission and one of the players reported a torpedo detonated as it left the bow tube. This caused considerable damage to his sub but he eventually was able to repair the flooding and continue the mission using his stern tubes only. All forward tubes were damaged in the explosion. During the mission, none of the players fired at each other nor did any stray torps strike another player. There weren't any mines or aircraft in the area either. They all played the mission properly. Has anyone ever experienced this type of torpedo malfunction during a mission before???????????????????????? :-?

Was it a Russian sub? :P

Bad weather + magnetics = premature explosion? What were his settings? (Depth included). Was the weather bad or at least windy with choppy seas?

If only someone could make in happen in campaign

I had it happen in campaign once but it was 200 meters away from sub so no damage to me.

My best guess would also be rough seas wich triggered a premature detonation.

I wonder though if a real U-boat could sustain a torpedo explosion and live to tell it..

Hartmann 10-30-05 01:36 PM

I think that a explosion inside the tube or the submarine could destroy the forward compartment easily, sinking the sub. :dead:
If the torpedo is running away, the damage depends of the distance when it explode.

in the pacific, o´kane was sink for his own torpedo, that make a circular pattern. :dead:
but this failure is not modeled in sh3.

Oh but is is! Just fire off a acoustic torpedo and go ahead flank.
That happend to me when I (idiot!!) surfaced and forgot about it.
I was happily cruising ahead when my aft ship suddenly exploded!

:damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:

oh Avon Lady... what a terrible thing to say :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

ya know... that'd be great if such things were modelled into the sim... the way my crews have been handling those torps when loading and moving em into the tubes, i'm surprised that i've never had that happen....

i have, though, had torps double back and pass close to my sub... and eventually hit the dd that was harrassing me...

... if i was still up there, i guess i would've taken the hit instead.

anyways... that must've been cool... a premature detonation inside the tubes... and attemting to fix everything before time and depth ran out...

coool... although, like someone said, i think that might've been the end of that crew if it were real life...

Wow, he was certainly unlucky. I had a few (max 10) early detonating torps all together in about 200 played missions... And the nearest one detonated about 120m in front of me...

Btw, is that early explosion chance hardcoded? :hmm:

Well, that reminds me of a rather nasty encounter I had with a merchant and a bad angle. I forget what the angle was, but it was really terrible angle. I just wanted to empty the tubes and head home. 125 or so I think.

Anyway, I fired it off, it nailed him directly in that little area that's rounded around the propellers of the ship and richocced like a bat out of hell straight back at me. It floated down, as I watched in the event screen. Fair enough, I said to myself, and ran full ahead and changed course for home. So I was just going along on my way and I switched to the external view to google at my sub underwater and I noticed a little blob floating down towards the front of my sub! A quick check shows that no destroyers are anywhere near me, so it can't be a depth charge.

I zoom in closer and lo and behold, it's my tardy torpedo! I chuckled for a good minute and a half or so, then my amusement turned to horror as it sank directly on the bow of my ship and exploded about two meters directly above the bow. The last thing I heard was a jubiliant crew yelling "Torpedo Impact!" and jeering like crazy men. Then "We have flooding sir!" and I'm at the U-boat destroyed screen. The screen said my U-boat had been destroyed by collision.

Pretty wacky bug whatever it was, try as I like, I couldn't recreate the incident. Even if I sped up to get directly under a torp that dudded, it would still explode either far above me or far below me.

Just one of those days, I guess. :-?

:) The player was using steam torps at the slow speed setting with the torps pistol set to magnetic not impact. Torp depth was the default 4 meters. The mission year was 1940 with a VIIC sub. He said all 4 forward tubes were out of commision after the detontation. Didn't mention if any crew were killed in the explosion, but had enough crew to repair the sub and carry on with stern torp tube.

:) P.S. Seas were moderately rough. Wind 8 meters per second.

I had premature explosions too, but far away from the sub.

I remember the memories of the captain Johaness Spiess, he experienced a torpedo detonation inside the torp tube, they was at dock, the ship sinks in few meters waters, all crew at the other side of the internal pressure firewall survive, only ground crew performing maintenance operations on trpedos dies.
They was rescued lot of hours later using a heavy crane, ship cant go to surface by own capacity.

I have had torps explode just as they launch whilst playing online, end result, sub sunk. Rough Seas every time, torps set to default, bow torpedo compartment destroyed.
