Drive home or Teleport?

Do you usually navigate your boat all the way back to port, avoiding warships, enemy planes, possibly even mines, while keeping an eye on the fuel guage, listening to the same tired records, and sneaking in to peek at Karl's latest pin-up?

Or do you zap right home as soon as torpedoes are spent, via the amazingly futuristic particle disruptor/reassember device?

(Not sure exactly where the PD/RD is located. Somewhere behind the head, I think. It was invented at the end of '38, or so it is rumored. Apparently High Command wanted to particle disrupt the entire city of London and reassemble it somewhere in Siberia, but for some reason the device only seems to work on U-boats...)

As a 1x Time Compression sailor... not driving back to base feels too much like cheating to me.

i try to... if i have enough fuel remaining, i usually do...

and this is one thing that should be factored in when renown is handed out at the end of a patrol... those Captains that navigate back should get additional renown...

... and the prettiest of the pretty nurses :yep:

I don't know how you do it. I'm too impatient to go out on patrol without TC, I don't see how you can go BACK to base at 1x.

It's allways 1024x for me in friendly waters, going from or back to base.

HW3 10-26-05 10:45 AM

Captains that navigate back do get additional renown, 100 points worth.

Mike 'Red Ocktober' Hense 10-26-05 10:49 AM

they should get more...
(i never noticed this... i'm gonna fast time it back after all mission objectiives are completed and see if there's a slot for navigating back)

and still there's the matter of those nurses...

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I'll trade renown for pretty FEMALE nurses any day! (Just thought I should be specific lol)

Also, renown is easily moddable... I tend to actually reduce it though. I don't like it when you get rewards so quickly they become meaningless.

At the moment I am heavily modifying the files in my game and incorporating more than 100 changes... I am almost finished.
I do use TC for mod stability testing.

I am hoping to tie up my little list of broken things and sail again late November.

Lol... I'm getting tired of fixing stuff. Once I am sure everything works right and doesn't cause CTD's... off I go into the sunset.

Doing 1x TC compression patrols gives you plenty of time to do stuff around the house, reading, and research.

I hate teleporting, its a dumb feature if you ask me. You can sail a IIA boat past mines, subfences and roughly 20 destroyers into Loch Ewe and sink 360000 tons worth of gunship (the nelson) and simply hit escape and teleport out.. way too cheatey if you ask me :P

Sailor Steve 10-26-05 11:43 AM

I don't have the temperament for x1 gaming; I have my TC bumped up to x4096, but I still sail the boat back to the base. I don't like teleporting either.

However, if you're rudder's broken and you're pointed toward Jolly Olde England, well...

Playing SH3 unpatched you can hit esc and teleport even when in dire straits. I remember receiving a hammering over at Scapa Flow, I was stuck at the bottom with moderate to heavy flooding and more DCs on the way. I knew I was a goner, and hit esc in frustration. My intention was to quit, but I was surprised to see that even then I was able to teleport. Well, I had to in order to quit anyway, and don't you think they gave me a shiny Iron Cross 2nd class and a sack of renown as well!

YAR! I've never been home, the sea, tis me home. I steal me gas from othar ships with ar bucket, ar rubber tube, and ar good ol' roll of mentos. I fashion arr prisoners inta' torpeders and use arr rations in that thar deck gun. YARR. :arrgh!:

Martin1813 10-26-05 03:26 PM

Always back to home.

my total tonnage increases substentially :hmm:

von Buelow 10-26-05 03:50 PM

I always TC back home... just one of my rules...

gas is never a problem... 30% I think is the lowest I've ever gotten...

I'm always empty on eels and usually empty of deck/flak ammo

and I usually do my grid search to keep my boss happy, unless it's just way out of the way (when I'll just go hunting)

Hartmann 10-26-05 04:17 PM

Always i return to home sailing, and using tc . i dont want stay playing a career for two months with 1x.

Returning to home means that your survive the patrol, and you still alive to go out again.

survive a complete patrol in the later years is a real challenge.

Redbear 10-26-05 04:29 PM

I always navigate all the way back, right up to docking at the pier with the band, nurses, etc. I do use TC until I am close to port, but then I finish at 1X to see the ships the Harbor Traffic mod added.
