Interesting sub-movie, it's very different from Das Boot (and thank god U-571) but still it managed to impress me.
First I liked the supernatural '6th Sense' type storyline, a narrow submarine is just perfect for it.
Also, the ending sequence was touching as well, perfect in line with the rest of the movie, nice.
And even if you don't like the story you will like the fact that the sub in this movie is a non German one, refreshing!
There are lots of very nice submerged shots and special effects, much better then Das Boot and evenly matched with U-571 submerged shots.

If you haven't seen it go rent this movie gentlemen, you will not be dissapointed.
If you HAVE seen the movie please look below, I have some tech questions about the movie.

********** WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD! ****************
********** WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD! ****************

The questions:

1. first, what type of Sub was it? It looked not that big from the outside but the internal compartiments looked quite 'open', not so cramped like the German U-Boats.

2. One ultra cool scene is where a DC hits the deck and slowly bounces from the stern to the tower: :|\
...KLUNK.....KLANG.....KLUNK....KLANG. Now is this possible? Didn't the DC's used a time based detonator in combo with a water pressure based detonator?

3. And what a bout the 'grapling hooks' the german (Z type) DD had? It looked awesome but did they really used that to snatch enemy Subs on the bottom??

4. On numerous ocasions the crew mentioned the word Hydrogen when talking about the air suply and batteries, I thought Hydrogen tech was still to troublesome to be of any practical use?

5. When reparing the hull (dunno how deep) the men went outside (looked a bit TO easy..) and made there way in between the Ballast tanks and the pressure hull. Man, it looked like you could park a bus there, so much space! Is this a realistic?

Hallo! A few months ago, this film passed on tv here and I saw it. My initial idea was that the film was going to be bad one but after all with is a pretty good submarines movie.
About the ship, since was a american sub, I think that was a Sargo class.
I think many of the DC were detonated by pressure based, but don't know if latter in the war were by the system that you sayed. And the hydrogen was also a surprise, because i dindn't know that the bateries lick hydrogen gas and that, as the movie show, can be a little hazardous the ones healt...

As I recall was this movie based on the supernatural? the crew going pariod over something or whatever? I have seen it,but I would not class it as a war movie but more on para normal side.
Intresting to watch though.

I heard on this forum not too long ago about cases like this. There was a U-Boat that found a DC sitting on the deck when they surfaced, they were going to take it back for research but decided to be safe and dumped it.

That's all well and good, if you like those kinds of movies. But, if you want to see a really good (I think) WWII Sub vs DD movie, you should check out "Enemy Below"    w/ Robert Mitchim, the DD skipper and another superb actor, I'm sorry that I don't recall his name, who plays the U-boat skipper. Highly recommend it, especially for those of our community. :sunny:

Kurt Juergens.

I liked Below. In fact I bought it on DVD. It's not really supposed to be taken seriously as an historical drama. It's a suspense/ghost story, and a pretty good one too. Plus, it has Olivia Williams in it, and I want to 'protect' her.
