(Newbie) question about ASDIC
 

Do escorts always operate their ASDIC or do they only turn it on after they have detected a nearby submarine?

PS. I use RUB 1.44 (really great mod :up: ) if it matters.

From my experience, I would say they only turn it on once a sub has been detected.

This is still a debated topic. I personally believe that convoy escorts do continuously ping (esp the lead escort). Many (including myself) have been detected running silent at 25 meters near the lead escort. Out of no where you start getting pinged, and that's that.

Not sure about that, cause many times I´ve been able to get past the screen of fron escorts without being pinged at all...then, if I rise the preiscope and one of the warships spots it or its wake, then the ping hell starts...

Thanks for the replies. I have had a the same experience as _alphaBeta_ with convoy escorts.

I've found when I encounter single destroyers that they don't seem to be pinging anything. I've been rammed before by DDs that didn't detect me, others have come within 200m of the boat without noticing.
