What was i doing wrong?

Ok,

Finally got Crazy Ivans SC campain working, and im on the 2nd Akula mission. Now Ive always had trouble with this one even in SC so, i decide to cheat and turn truth on. Now im using LW v2 mod and im with 5 miles of the LA, doing 4 knts, Still no trace on towed array, NB or BB even thou the suker is doing 7 knts.

No worries i think, ill just get closer..then i get the awful you have been counter detected message. Wouldnt of minded but there is still no signal from the LA whatsoever.

SO what was i doing wrong? surely i would of heard him sooner?

Kapitan 10-01-05 05:51 PM

yes you should have puzzeling

SquidB 10-01-05 05:53 PM

Jesus Kap that was a fast reply....what im getting at is this down to captian error, or a reflection of just how poor the russian sonar is? or even a bug?

I love LW mod and have agreed with the changes, so is this a indiction of how life will be now for us poor beleagured ruskie sub caps, or should i have picked the LA up sooner?

To put it in a different way...

The Improved Akula SSN, which went to sea in 1990, soon revealed that the Soviets had surpassed the U.S. Navy in some areas of acoustic quieting--the Improved Akula was quieter than our newest attack submarines, the Improved LOS ANGELES class. Admiral J.M. Boorda, the Chief of Naval Operations, told the House:

This is the first time since we put NAUTILUS to sea that [the Russians] have had submarines at sea quieter than ours. As you know, quieting is everything in submarine warfare.

Which Akula?
LW made the Akula II about even with the 688I in noise levels. The Gepard also has the Pelamida II array, which makes it a pretty even match. The Vepr, I think, will tend to be detected first.

The Akula I-Imp will likely be detected by the 688I first unless there is a large speed difference.

Knowing the SSP and sea state will also help. 5 miles is usually enough in this mod, except in very bad conditions.

The akula in the subcommand missions is the Vepr.

Squid, I'm having issues with this myself. Tracking a sub that doesn't have aft baffles is :dead: I'm afraid you'll find most of the subcommand sub-vs-sub missions unplayable.

Kapitan 10-02-05 01:25 AM

gepard will pick up the 688i before the 688i knows about it ive managed close in tracks on 688' and 688i's and ive had no problems even without towed arrays

PeriscopeDepth 10-02-05 01:29 AM

Hey Kap,

Was this in custom built missions? What was the tactic of the 688I set to?

Kapitan 10-02-05 01:33 AM

tactic 688I was to track me and had a ladder box in most soem had perimiter and some transit and search way points

and yeah a custom mission

PeriscopeDepth 10-02-05 01:59 AM

May have had something to do with the waypoints. When the tactic is set to transit AI units will continue on blissfully unaware of everything.

But why is this, the sub sound levels have not be changed that significantly....why all of a sudden is Sub vs Sub impossible?

Is it worth going back to the orginal database?

Kapitan 10-02-05 06:23 AM

what i heard was vepr is quieter than gepard when i heard that i was pi*sing myself littraly

gepard is of a totaly re design and has newer and improved sound dampning equipment so how can it be louder than an older boat with less sound dampning equipment

something is wrong here

I've found that if you try the missions honestly without knowing the starting locations of the enemy subs, that its pretty much just luck to stumble into the right spot at the right time to detect the enemy sub. Some ASW missions are semi-rushed as well, precluding a extensive search needed to really find a sub that doesn't want to be found.

I wouldn't go back to the old database, but some sound level tweaking or sensor-sensitivity tweaking will make the missions playable.

Molon Labe 10-02-05 05:57 PM

Sub v sub isn't anywhere near impossible, you just have to realize that US subs will nearly always have the first detection.
