Minefields

I have noticed that the mission editor that comes with SH3 provides for minefields.
Are there any minefields in missions or campaigns? I am playing my third 39-45 campaign now (first time with 100% realism) and I have yet to encounter a single mine.
I am not using any mods.

I have yet to encounter any mines.

So you better keep a good lookout :D

I'm not sure that the minefields are purely historical. I decided to be brave during my last patrol, and head to my patrol grid via the English Channel. At the war's outbreak the British laid replicated the 1918 Dover mine barrage, which was the reason that the Uboats had to make the long journey around the isles. This should have made my transit impossible. Yet, I was through unscathed, both on egress and ingress.

So, yes, I am sure there are mines, but they are not fully where they are supposed to be.

RuB supposedly adds mines where they're supposed to be.

I tried to sneak into Liverpool in a recent campaign. There are mines, I chickened out after I saw these views from the Observation periscope and ordered full reverse!
Only running SHIII patch v1.4b.

I have never encountered any mines either, but I know I'll find them the hard way :dead:

Actually i got around the Scapa Minefields at the western entrance by accident. I just went as close as possible to the coast while submerged and saw no mines.

I've never encounted mines, but it would be cool, and scary, to encounter them.

Lumpy 09-03-05 01:33 AM

I've never encoutered mines either in the game but i have not gone into harbours as that was next to never done and i like to just head out to the convoy lanes.

The channel was off limits to u-boats because of them pretty early on and there were a lot of mines drop into the north sea and Bay of Biscay to try and neutrilize shipping.

I expect an encounter would however go something like this...

sailing along-

run over magnetic fused mine lying sedately on the sea floor (you would never see especially through your scope), followed by catastrophic structural failure leading to all hands lost at sea. :damn:

probably with no message sent to BdU as to where or what happened to you.

Having mines in game to my mind should be there as they were no go zones (area denial i think is what they call it) but next to those acoustic torpedoes which were almost in game just would'nt be much fun for all those hours spent on your campaign.

I agree, BDU should 'strongly disadvise' going into certain areas at certain times of the war and if you're foolish enough to, you shouldn't be too upset about exploding yourself :P

I have always ran ports and never incounterd any mine from 1.0 to 1.4.

1.3 to 1.4 I have only done abought 2 partols in 1939 agin cause of the damed saves coming up as KIA and most of the time I did not even start that mission.

I have ran in to the Sub nets but ther more like a under water wall. I think you can go over it but I aways ran under PD so I could get by the DDs.

The First Wave

Based out of Wilhelmshaven for my first patrol with a VIIB (U-51) I was given a patrol grid AM19. So, not thinking, I planned my route through the English Channel and up to AM19.
I got to the entrance to the Channel and sunk a French Tramp Steamer (I guess I wasn't supposed to at that time of the war). Then I encountered a PT boat, an armed trawler and V&W DD. I ended the game there.
I was talking to HunterICX and he advised me not to go any further and sent me 3 maps of the mine fields in and around the Channel. SO, naturally I reversed course and decided to go up and around Scapa Flow to get to AM19.
I opened the SH3 editor the way HunterICX did but I so nothing under the tab Explorer (but he did). How do I get those choices under that tab. I cannot and do not know how to find the mine fields. I certainly don't wish to run into any mines or submarine nets.
Where do I get the maps showing the Mine fields and Sub netting?

Oh yea, I got my old U-51 again so I hope I get to finish the game, or at least get to the 44th patrol with her again. No I do not have the same name nor am I a Kapitänleutnant yet, but I'm not changing the signature, as I'm hopeful to attain that rank again, then I'll change the name.

Man, I must be unlucky. I've ran into mines at least three times that I can remember. They never destroyed my uboat but I had a lot of flooding and the only reason I wasn't destroyed is I hit the bottom every time. Twice in the Irish Sea and once in the English channel.

I should say that I've gone through a minefield and not hit one before, then, thinking that there must not be a minefield there, hit one on a return journey.

I'm currently using GW, but I know for a fact that I hit one before I was using that mod.

I am using GW also. I found out how to find where the mine fields were, even up around Scapa Flow. So, I have to plan my route carefully around that area. The map showed lots of DD's and Hunter Killers in that area. But nothing with the current date behind the names. However, I'm not taking any chances. Gonna take it slow and easy. I have no radar on my sub because it's only 1939.
