Please help with sonar

It's June, 1942 and I've just bought sonar for my VIIC. The problem is I don't know how it works. I get a contact and I have my periscope locked on it, but when I click on "estimate range to contact" nothing happens. All it says is "no contact selected" or something like that. What are the conditions for me to use it? Or is it a bug of some sort?

I've tried to manually do it myself, but when I take over the station, the (I think it is) sonar console looks like it's off and I can't seem to find the On switch. Help, please.

there is a tutorial in downloads section of Subsim which I think explains how to use all these things proper.

you have to individuate the target using the hydrophone before, then you can ping it. Be careful to use it, some DD could be listening your sonar!!!

Do you mean using the command "follow nearest sound contact" on the hydrophone? Then would I be able to ping it?

What exactly is the advantage of active sonar?

What steps must I take to ping a target?

I mean to press the "H" key, then turn your hydrophone to intercept the enemy ship. If close enough, about 4/5km a kind of automatic target identification will appear on your right, usually it say "merchant" or "warship". Hold the hydrophone on that identified ship and ping it if you want know the exact distance from her. It is very useful in heavy fog conditions, but be sure to be in the middle of the Atlantic, otherwise the DD will hear your pinging. Or ping her near the English coasts, a more challenging game is guaranteed. :gulp:

cunnutazzo, thanks a lot for your help. I'll give it a try the next time I go out on patrol. One last question, must I do the pinging manually or can I tell my sonar guy to do it for me?

both, you can choose to ping her manually if your guy is too tired to do it or if you are not busy.
