Great stuff!
Thanks Avon Lady. |
Good read, but it states that U505 is the only IX left.
If my memory serves me correct theres one more on display in England. Lifted from the water by "Den bla avis" in the 90's |
Growing up in Chicago in the 60's I visited the sub often. This boat is what got me hooked on U Boats. I now live about 2 hours NW of the city and haven't seen it since the early 80"s. Cannot wait to see it in its new underground home.
Just waiting for the school season to begin and all the yard apes are back in class. The one thing that really bothered me every time I visited is all the mis-behaving children treating it like it was nothing but a huge jungle Gym. Absolutely no respect. |

It also states, that 5 uboats remain today. I only know three which can be considered in a more or less presentable condition. 1. U-995 in Laboe, Germany (Typ VII C/41) 2. U-505 in Chicago (Typ IX C) 3. U-2540 in Bremerhaven, Germany (Typ XXI) If you will you could also depict the prototype "Vessiko" in Finland. This type of boat was developed by German engineers in Finland and served as Typ II A in the German Navy. Vessiko though never was used by the Germans. The last remaining real uboat would be U-1 from WWI which is located in the "Deutsches Museum" in Munich. Finally - also in Munich - you can visit the prop of U-96 from "Das Boot" which is 1:1 replica of the interior of a Typ VII C uboat which even has original parts of real boats like the diesels and some other equipment. |
Thanks for posting that. I enjoyed it.
