Its almost 1945 and ive never seen..
a battleship
a fleet carrier ... or pretty much any other military vessle... ive seein one small task force with a rogue carrier.. but thats the only time EVER and that was back in the day.. where the HELL are the warships destroyers, and cargo vessles are getting monotonous.. it would be nice to see something... interesting now and then.. any mod or way to increase the instances of task forces and such? |
I either saw any capital ships in Scapa Flow or Loch Ewe, but the big place to find them is in the Med. That is where I saw all my major task forces.
|
Really? every time I go there, there's just small merchants and stuff. :-?
|
The only one I have ever seen was off of Loch Ewe in July of 41. It practically ran me down out of nowhere.
|
In July '42 I got a radio report of a large task force heading towards Liverpool from the NE of Ireland. Naturally I was patrolling south of Ireland, out of Brest, and nearly out of diesel ;) So I couldn't pursue...
Apart from that, the only warships I've ever encountered or heard a radio report of are the usual DD convoy escorts, and an occasional lone DD going somewhere. You might try the mission editor, I set up a couple BB's escorted by 4 DD's the other night, and managed to kill both BB's before I died :) Good fun! |
I played SH3 exclusively and non-stop since March 23 and finally saw two Nelsons playing RuB 1.43 -- last week. That was my first sighting of a real warship in five months of play.
|
Heh, I've only ever sunk a carrier in career. And even then it's because it was inexplicably stuck in mid-ocean (probably due to storm damage).
Otherwise, no dice. And up to just a couple of weeks ago, I would play the game daily. :hmm: |
I've installed the "Daily Contacts Report 1.01" Mod by Flakwalker lately. With my IXB I sunk a Dido and Fiji near Pantelleria as they were coming from Malta. On another occasion I sunk a Nelson BB at nearly the same location as it was steaming towards Malta. Found it astonishing that the Dido sunk after a single torpedo hit. And it was a impact fuse as weather was quite stormy.

See my SIG. :arrgh!: I encountered (in sight) 2 taskforces in all my SH3 platime, one being a Battleship fleet (where I sunk a Revenge BB, see SIG) and another one, a small Carrier + escorts.
I knew the seccond one was a Carrier because I got atacked by swordfishes, and very soon after that Mr. DD and frends, ending my career rarther violently.. :shifty: I don't do harbor raids because I feel that they are not protected enough as they where in real life, no air cover, loads of patroll ships and DD's etc. Atacking feels like an exploit to me. Mid sea encounters are Very rare, another reason for me to keep playing SH3, I need at least one carrier kill before I even think of abandoning the game. I suggest patrollign around the Gibraltar Strait, quite a few Taskforce reports there.. |

When I hunt TFs, I generally find one west of Gibraltar every two weeks or less. There are a few other choke points for TFs, but they generally have so much merchant traffic in '39-40 that it's painful to hunt. You get interrupted by single merchants at least once an hour, or several times a day in '39-'40 if you're using RuB. So, I tend to very much prefer hitting them in Gibraltar. I've toyed with the idea of changing the TF experience with IC, but I haven't decided what a more realistic TF encounter should be. I'd think more fleet destroyers, definitely a few flak artillery light cruisers, and fewer battleships. While I wouldn't mind introducing a carrier taskforce to replace TF03, which is a carrier and battleship mixed force, I don't believe the concept of the carrier taskforce actually existed in WWII so it would probably be unrealistic. Still, it might be _fun_ to include one with a CV, several light cruisers, and a fleet destroyer screen. Maybe I'll do that today... |

If you want to encounter capital ships and carriers more often, try out U-boat War mod/campaign.

The crew has named me the "Giant Slayer".. :D The 5th patrol of this career the next one after the one i wrote before...Again in the straight between Sicily and Pantelleria.May 20,the action around Malta is getting hot.Its 00.15 that i pick up multiple warships screws coming straight at me!.One sounds big :arrgh!: Its pitch black, raining ,thundering,a good storm again..But i cant resist to try to see what the big one is.I try to aproach in a good and safe angle, but its difficult with only the sonar to get the course right...Silent running, periscope depth.I can hear them, where are they?Damn, you cant see anything but the darkness..00.45,they should be in front of me?PING!!!PING!!Behind me!!A Hunt DD,but it went past me already, huh! It lights it spotlights towards me!Im about to shout DIV....a nother spotlight blinds me in the pericope. There is a Fiji CL in parallel course with the Hunt in front of me!The tubes are already open the fish are armed and the pray is just under our noses.400-600m,dont know,no time to calculate a solution.I put a salvo of 4 on their the way.Shout DIVE!!!!Change course,go deep,PING,PING,PING,fire decoys!Hear three of the fish hit!A big explosion!Deapth charges in the water! They will want me for that! The boat gets one in the rear! The rear dive planes are damaged!Silent runing, change course. For the next hour or so i hear the occasional ping and depth charges in the water. But they never get a good fix on me.Its fairly shallow in these waters and i was near the bottom.I heard two DDs and i think another CL :) 02.00 they gave up on me,i surfaced and headed to Pantelleria to make emergency repairs.I wonder if they will want to give me a desk job after i get back to La Spezia? :(
