How to add new ports.
Since I've now got British and US submarines and ships working OK till something better comes along, I have been doing operations on the other side of the world so to speak, in the Pacific.
I would like to add a few ports hear and there but not sure of the right way to go about it. I've seen the images of some of the ports stored in the sim but they seem unique to certain areas. Edited the title, since the this first post I now know how and it may help others. |
Hi Col!
Take a look at Locations.cfg (think its in Data\textures but can't be sure as am at work). Its very similar to bases.ini in SHII. You can add your port location and what building/port models you want to use. Regards MLF |
i'm allso guessing here that changing the name and location of the german uboat bases in the LND campaign files to pacific bases would allow you to run a campaign from those pcific bases allso...(given that you add jap shipping allso to attack)
in theory only the campaign start map would be wrong..in that it would still show the stock european theatre...bit of jiggery pokery with a new back ground image and bingo you would have to ignore the patrol zones order asit's likely that they will still the european zones and i can't see how you could edit them to areas in the pacific as there is no kriegmarine designation for the pacific ie CH78 etc just lat long co-ordinates...not sure these could be added and respond correctly...but apart from that a playable campaign is there for the taking just needs the usual graphical mods..medals maps etc.. |
Thanks guys,
I'm in work right now so can't respond properly, I did look in the locations folder and I saw the tga images (I think) if I'm in the right place. I thought about trying to add those images but wasn't sure how, I thought there might be ab easy way, will check when I get home. |
I think I've fathomed out how to do it, but I will need to know the coordinates.
Edited: I didn't see the coordinates when in the mission editor at the bottom, my task-bar was hiding them, I can make progress now. :) |
Col
If you find an easier way than getting the Lat/Long from mission editor, then transfering them to the Locations.cfg and then testing (with the copy protection time lag) etc etc, then please tell. I have been trying to mod St Nazaire so that it resembles photos of the time and also the Satelite pictures on Google maps, using models available and boy, does it take willpower! MLF |
Well I did put a city in Tokyo, I got the long/lat from a site on the Internet.
It appeared on the map OK, but it was too far inland to be seen from withing the bay, I found it by using the free camera. It is almost the same way to place buildings as it was in SH2, so now I need to move the city slightly then add a large dock to make it look a bit more real. It will be a long job to add further cities/harbours but I'll do it bit by bit. If I find an easier way then I'll obviously let you know. |
Slight update:
I moved the city more towards the water so now it can be seen from the submarine bridge. I then added more city buildings plus some industry. Then added some docks of various size, and now it is looking a lot better. |
there isnt a list somewhere of the ports marked on the map is there Col?
i'm thinking of the port names as they appear as the date changes new ones appear as you go thru the campaign.....it's probably in the LND allready so ignore this if it is but i wonder if some of the pacific bases etc are listed allready (the german/jap base at penang is a stock base allready in the game so mabe theres others ? other wise it's a mamoth task....what were the two or three major allied bases ? |
CB,
The only list I've seen is in the Data - Terrain - Locations folder. Yes it is a long job, it has taken me a while now to get the cities and harbours to look OK, and I'm only part way through Tokyo Bay. I placed one lot near the water-front but I couldn't see it, when I looked on the map it was a long way inland, so I moved it again, I don't know how that happened. |
Another thing I've found adding docks, cities & industry:
I had 5 types of scenery around Tokyo harbour, this included 2xdocks 2xcities & 1xindustry. I tried to add a 6th dock but I kept getting a crash so I gave up, then I had the idea of adding another dock further down the bay at Yokohama... this worked. So there must be a limit to the amount of scenery you can have in a certain area. But as MLF mentioned above, it is a pain keep having to go in the mission editor to get the correct co-ordinations then open the sim to see if it has worked and it is where you wanted it, then back to the editor again to add more or make a correction if needed. |
is it possible to add the ports etc to a normal mission file instead of the campaign LND file? if so it might make testing a little easier as you can easily find the entry you want to edit to adjust the location? is there a cfg file for a port cities etc?...dang the loading times in sh3....bad enougth in SH2 but with 3 there are two loading bars to sit thru..one as the sim loads another as the mission loads---does drive you barmy very quickly
update;; i added a coastal bunker to a normal mission file with just the player sub and the bunker at Singapore.. then i opened the mission file a replaced the bunker enetrys with port entrys [Unit 2] Name=Singapore Class=NavalBase Type=407 Origin=British Side=0 Commander=0 CargoExt=-1 CargoInt=-1 CfgDate=19380101 DeleteOnLastWaypoint=true GameEntryDate=19380302 GameEntryTime=0 GameExitDate=19450301 GameExitTime=0 EvolveFromEntryDate=false Long=12460910.000000 Lat=153120.000000 Height=4.000000 Heading=180.000000 Speed=0.000000 CrewRating=3 DelayMin=0 ReportPosMin=-1 ReportPosProbability=100 RandStartRadius=0.000000 NextWP=0 this placed singapore on the map in red as british...but i couldn't find any buildings at all...i had the same issue adding it to the LND file it didn't even show on the map via the lnd entrys.. dunno if this is of any help at all Col... not sure i have the collossal patience needed for this stuff anymore ! any idea why the port didnt appear in the mission? there's no other buildings around there .... double Up-date..lol i had a look in the data/terrain folder as you suggested and in the locations.cfg nice file this ..very familiar...so i added singapore to this file instead of the lnd or the mission file and it turned up ok....not marked on the map at all but the port buildings structures etc were all there and animated as normal (smoke etc) [Location 210] Long=103.840836 Lat=1.277412 Heading=180 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=true FileName=Large_harbor_type_III LocationName=Singapore this should help a bit asit's less labouriuos and all inclusive than working via the LND file dunno why it doesn't show named on the map but as the buildings show up in game as per expected it should be a way to add additional buildings without cluttering up the map...try adding the extra Tokyo buildings via this file and see if the game accepts them? any huw this file is the way to populate all the shorlines in SH3 with buildings etc without affecting the campaign files folks have installed..(which means it would be compatible with all the variuos campaign mods.. ;) ) and possibly bypasses the campaign file limits on number of buildings etc in close proximity with each other (if that turns out to be an issue) so theres a giant mod for some-one to go barmy making lol!! :-j |

Tried what I suggested here and realised that it is not practical - apologies :-? Worked fine in SHII. MLF |
Here is the ports/cities I've added to Japan so far if anyone wants them, copy and paste them in Data - Terrain then add them to the end of the Locations file.
Don't forget to make a back-up first. [Location 210] ;Tokyo City 01 Long=140.0006439 Lat=35.688358 Heading=200 OnLand=true ShowOnMap=true FileName=City_Fr_Gr [Location 211] ;Tokyo City 02 Long=139.957271 Lat=35.691692 Heading=200 OnLand=true ShowOnMap=true FileName=City_Fr_Gr [Location 212] ;Tokyo Harbor 01 Long=139.915619 Lat=35.642944 Heading=130 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=true FileName=Large_harbor_type_II [Location 213] ;Tokyo Industry 01 Long=140.047790 Lat=35.664440 Heading=130 OnLand=true FileName=Industry [Location 214] ;Tokyo Harbor 02 Long=140.028534 Lat=35.669609 Heading=210 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=true FileName=Large_harbor_type_II [Location 215] ;Yokohama harbor Long=139.676285 Lat=35.421528 Heading=90 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=true FileName=Large_harbor_type_II [Location 216] ;Ito harbor Long=139.139694 Lat=35.190197 Heading=90 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=true FileName=Large_harbor_type_II [Location 217] ;Atami Industry Long=139.164032 Lat=35.253529 Heading=125 OnLand=true ShowOnMap=true FileName=Industry CB, the Singapore entry, I'll add that to mine and re-number it [Location 218] I'll keep updating as I go so if anyone is interested keep looking, and please, if I'm out by a few miles or degrees then forgive me, but it'll do for now. |
