Of visual sightings - and - data links - and such...

Hi,

Just recently started with DW... I have played SC / 688i and I have some real world Sub experience - too...

When using the FFG with SH-3 deployed... I have my SH-3 over fly some unknown contacts... Even after the over flight - the contacts are not positively ID'd... Is there something special I need to do - to ID a contact... I would think a visual inspection should provide the most positive ID on a surface contact...

Also when using the FFG - If I have my SH-3 loaded with missiles - how would I get the SH-3 to attack something using missiles ??? I see I can add a waypoint to drop a torpedo or buoy - however - I don't see a means to launch anything else...

Again with the FFG - I ran that single mission off Korea - working with a friendly cruiser... When I started the mission - all the contacts I had were unknown... With the data links that we use today - should I not immediately know who and where my friends are ??? Are friendly forces able to identify - share - and - prosecute - unfriendly forces ?

Skimmers - baaaah...
;)

Great Job Sonalysts... I can vouch for the Sub side - this is about as real as it get's...

Thanks,
Scott

How was the visibility in that mission?

If the "Engage with" menus are enabled, you should be able to right-click on a target and see "Engage with > Helo 1: MK 50 Torpedo (or Penguin missile if it's loaded)".

You have to wait for the other units in the sim to report their sensor information into the link; there's no "pre-scripted" link info. You're at the mercy of the in-game sensors on the other units, but as their information improves, so does yours. And the answer to your second question is Yes, although you can't order friendly AI forces to attack. As long as the ROE are set properly by the mission designer, they will usually attack on their own.

P.S. There's no SH-3 in the game, but I knew what you meant anyway ;) Check your order-of-battle, sailor!

LOL - DOH - I'm such a bubblehead... :)

All those egg beaters are the same...

Thanks for the info Tim... "The engage with" on the navigation menu - should allow me to use the SH-60's missles - when I am playing the FFG ??? Kewl... I was trying to do it from the ASTAC display...

On the Visibility - it was good - I was running the African Bees mission...

On knowing the friendlies - I meant - should not the Cruiser I am working with start the game as a blue circle ??? I mean we have the same mission and would probably be in direct communications... Or is this just a limitation of the simulation ???

Regards,
Scott

if this cruiser is in your side, and you didn't forgot to open the link, you will always see him as a blue circle (except if you are a dived sub)

Hmmm, not sure I ever had any problems with visual IDs by the AI helos.... I'll take a look at it.

Unless "Show Allies" is enabled on the Nav Map, you won't see friendly units until you join the link.

All,

Hmm - seems as if I missed something... I think I need to go back and revist the manual...

Hmmm - Joining the Link - that you both pointed out - seems to be where the problem lies... Ooops... How do I join the link as the FFG... I know how to communicate with my "helicopter" :) via the ASTAC screen - however - I didn't know I needed to do anything special - to link to other ships in the battlegroup...

Thanks for your patience - guys - kinda a newb at this surface warfare stuff... I won't mention that I did a year and a half in the reserves - on a Knox class - EITHER !!!
;)

Scott

You're already in the link, you just need to select "Show Link Data" in the Nav Map, or make sure that it's selected.

Oh yes, you deserve lots of abuse for that ;) (but in reality, we could use the skimmer expertise around here!)

What Frigate were you on in the Reserves? I was on the USS Moinester (FF 1097) from 88-91, before they sent it to Ingleside for Reserve duty. Man, if you got on the rust bucket, my heart goes out to you. I was sounding the potable water tanks, and the plumb bob on the sounding tape kept going and going, until it came off the holder and disappeared. The plumb had punched right through the bottom of the ship! The ChENG wouldn't even let us needle gun the bilges, because he was afraid we would punch through the hull.
