Liberty ship Red???

Why do some of the Liberty ships in SHIII have red hulls not all but maybe
one out of 7 ships have red hulls.

Mods?

Are you using any mods? Like the most recent Sub Commander?

Thanks for the input

I've only ever seen one Liberty, and as I recall it was rusty red colored. I have some skins installed, but nothing for that ship that I know of.

The third alternate skin is red in SH3 without any mods.

You can get a liberty skin pack from terrapins site. I have a blue/gray liberty skin I did to get rid of this red one.

I thought the automatic skin rotatations failed in game?

No skin mods added to my game and I occassionally have seen the red skin on Liberty ships. In fact I saw a convoy with 4 liberties in it, "one of these ships isn't the same....". Sorry about that, I have 3 young kids and I reverted back to Sesame Street....Big Bird

Ah, well alternate skins work fine in my game. I thought the are used when Liberty#2 Liberty#3 is called etc.

I did think for a while that was one of the drawbacks of lots of single ship entries in a convoy, eg.

libertyx1
libertyx1
libertyx1

means it may not call the extra skins in a convoy

whereas

libertyx3 will do,

but I am unsure of this theory, however. The SCR doesnt demand this, but the ships are numbered differently.

jason, next time you do one of your AAR's for IC, just check that more than one colour of ship is present for each class. I'm pretty sure it is ok, but worth checking.

That is my understanding how it works in the SCR layer (at least that's how it for sure works in single missions and the campaign SCR layer uses the same naming routine as in missions) while in the RND layer skins are picked at random.

You'd be surprised, but there was a certain shade of pink, that was used by the British navy in early war. Apparently some commander was watching a line of ships when one suddenly dissapeared from view much much quicker than others. It was some passenger liner painted in it's civil colors, which were lavander type. So he devised this paint scheme, believing in its total effectiveness, that had full flotilla in pink/maroon color (Mountbatten Pink - http://www.steelnavy.com/images/chips/RNchip02.jpg). Anyway, HMS Kenya was doing an operation in Norway and german battery fire from land couldn't have success because their color markers were painted also in pink - thus the gunners couldn't figure out if they scored hits and where. it's one of those camouflage stories, don't know if it's true, but a pink ship was quite a real thing.

And the reason for pink/maroon color is because of the early morning/evening colors of sky - most crucial and denagerous time, when the visibility is bad, but good enough for the u-boat. ;)

Then why the need of a batch file to rotate the merchant ship variety pack, if the game already handles this?

I am very confused.

Actually, I may be wrong about the RND layer because I did tests quite some time ago and may not remember the results correctly.

Jace11 08-04-05 04:07 PM

jason is in the best position to test. His RND layer contains convoys with only single entries per class.

If all the ships of a certain class appear as the same colour, then it may a problem hithertoo unnoticed.

The thing is, any C2 I find as a single ship contact is usually white skin. If it was random in the RND, you'd see the other colours too.

When I tested my liberty skin, I used a single mission and just added 6 liberties. 2 white, 2 grey 2 red spawned.

There definitely is a red liberty ship; it annoyed me too. You can download the late war edition of the Merchant Variety Pack to get liberty ships with more plausible paint schemes. I've actually updated the liberty ship since the late war edition was released but I haven't released it yet.

I think I've seen 1 Liberty freighter in about 100 patrols. Where do you go to find so many that you can say '1 out of 7'?
