If you miss the link StdDev gave above, the song is also included in Beery's Real U-Boat mod. Even if you don't want the rest of the RUB package, you can download and unpack it, then find 'Fanfara_01.wav' in the Sound directory. Put it in the same place in your SH3 installation, and the band will play 'Muß i' denn'.

I've meant to ask this before, and this seems a good time to do it: my previous careers started in Wilhelmshaven where there was a band, but now I'm based at Kiel, where there doesn't seem to be one. Is that correct?

An interesting tidbit of information: this was the traditional song played when a vessel was leaving for a long patrol, and I remember reading once that it caused some trouble with the Bismarck. The Kriegsmarine obviously wanted to keep their plans a secret, but when 'Muß i' denn' was played as Bismarck left the harbour, everyone present realized that she was actually going to try to break out into the Atlantic rather than simply re-basing to Norway. After she was sunk, there was some criticism of the choice of music as a security breach.

Kiel has a band and the crowd, but to get to them you have to make a hard left turn after leaving the Bunker. Kind of odd.

Yup, Kiel's band is better placed IMHO... I'd expect a band to welcome me back, but not to see me off. That always seemed odd to me when at Wilhelmshaven.

But it is Historically Accurate to have the Band Send off and Welcome Back. They received both.

Mebbe true, but that doesn't change how I feel about it. :)

What's even odder, come to think of it, is playing 'Muss i' denn', a song about the sorrow of parting, to welcome someone home! I can't remember what the band played when the boat returned in Das Boot ... surely not the same song?

Would be nice if there were some way to get the band in SH3 to play a different tune when you return, but it's probably not possible ...

Duncan Idaho 08-04-05 01:28 AM

I suppose you could manually switch files between leaving and returning, if you really wanted to have that 'feature'. :D

KL Seestern 08-04-05 09:02 AM

Yes, true enough! :) Hmm ... I wonder about the file name 'Fanfara_01' ... does that mean the game might have originally been intended to include a variety of fanfares?

Duncan Idaho 08-04-05 09:12 AM

You know, that's probably pretty likely. Else why not just call it fanfare.wav?
