Two Convoys at Once?

This is the weirdest thing. Right now, I'm sitting in wait for a large convoy that's about 10,000 meters away heading straight for me (bearing 270). There's a second convoy that appeared just shortly after (bearing (315). I have them both detected by hydrophones. They are both quite large and heading directly for my position!

LOL.

I've just got the exact same thing. If I don't figure this out soon i'm gonna end up as the filling in a DD sandwich.

Syxx_Killer 07-10-05 08:24 AM

Which convoy has the larger ships? :arrgh!:

JoachimV 07-10-05 08:33 AM

just sit still and hope they ram eachother and if they dont fire every torp u got on the point where the 2 convoys will gather

tycho102 07-10-05 09:35 AM

That's fairly impressive. I've ran into two convoys on the same patrol, one right after another, but never two at once.

I could make some fairly crude, albeit creative, sexual innuendos about all this, but I won't...

BettingUrlife 07-10-05 10:49 AM

Please don't tell us you have only 1 torpedo left ...

I'm down in the Gibraltar area (southwest near the islands off the coast of Africa). It was late when I got to this point in the patrol so I haven't started my attack yet (and I have a full load of torpedoes!). I'm facing about 345 degrees, one convoy is directly to starboard and the other is coming towards me at bearing 315. I'm on the south side of the starboard convoy, so I'm pointing at everything right now. It's also night time.

I'm going to let everything come right down on me and then mix it up. With all the confusion, I should be able to get two cycles of fish in the water (I hope). Everything's too far away to report compositions yet but you can bet I'll be going for the biggies.

Edit: Later
I returned to this patrol and got a clear picture of the scenario. The other convoy northwest of my position is steaming at medium speed (the one to my west is running at 6 knots). As time passed, I determined the NW convoy is running almost parallel, not towards me as I first thought. It's actually overtaking the other convoy.

One problem and this is the second time this has happened. I noticed that even though I'm at periscope depth, the watch crew is up on the sail searching the horizon but underwater. I can't get them to return to quarters and as soon as the destroyers get close enough, I'm detected. This is frustrating.

Try hitting the P-key (periscope-depth) even though running at periscope depth. That should get rid of the underwater watch-crew. At least it did with patch 1.3, haven't tried it yet with v1.4b

Thanks for the tip.

I forgot to include in my update that the northern convoy running at medium speed is huge. It's running west to east (on a bearing of around 80 degrees) and stretches lengthwise over 9 KM! I've never seen a convoy that big before.

Wow, it is like the perfect storm of convoys! Let us know how much tonnage you're able to bag,

Sounds like those astronomical photos of galaxies colliding..

Well, I'm glad I saved the patrol at the point I did. I know some may frown on this but it gives me a chance to try different approaches for bagging as many ships as possible. I returned to the patrol still about 13 km ahead of the southern convoy (hydro range). I surfaced and raced ahead to the northeast and submerged at a spot where I could ambush the northern convoy with hopes of escaping south just in time to greet the southern convoy that's steaming at 6 knots.

I managed to get that far and got a good look at the convoy running at 13 knots. A passenger liner, T3, three T2's, two Troopers, and the rest a gaggle of C3's, C2's, lots of Liberties and Victories, and so on. It's a whopper.

But...as soon as I raise my scope just enough to see the convoy for shooting, I'm instantly detected. This time, there were no scuba crewman on the sail. It's January 1944, so I guess the escorts are either all super elite or got some new technology. The escorts were on me in two minutes (I was sitting submerged about 1000 meters of the convoy's centerline). The lead escort went right by me at 750 meters or so. I guess I'm going to have to try a more distant position for my attack.

I'll keep you posted.

Fascinating situation to be in :|\
Please continue to send despatches. BdU requests pictures, especially of your Navigation Map plots :)

Good luck and good hunting, Kaleun

Yes, I know that convoy. The escorts are primarily or all elite. It's a fast military convoy.
