I know the feeling... I was in a similar position but had the bow pointed 90 degrees parallel to a task force. Fired the first six from around 1000 yds and turned to fire the stern tubes... all missed (well, maybe one hit, but I was too busy looking for DD's to notice). It was on a BB anyway, didn't even slow it down. Manual TDC, of course.
Did manage to save my last few fish for a transport in the Formosa Straits, fired the Mk27 and it initially missed, but the transport did a zig and it hit. The DD escort went out of sight behind the target. I did a battle surface and set the ship aflame with two remaining gun rounds... a secondary explosion sealed her fate (along with a few dozen 40mm rounds).
Lucky for me, I managed to end up with around 20,000 tons that patrol, not counting two maru's I sank with the deck gun (one battle I had to crash dive since the ship opened up on me).
Who says PA isn't a blast?!?
