Help max realism

I have a massive problem, and it is that I tend to close too much. What I mean is that in low visibility conditions, I tend to kinda see the enemy out of the fog or darkness, and then it is too late to submerge, they start throwing shells at me and run away at max speed. How do I avoid this? Do I just not attack in low visibility conditions or do I try to plot them using hydrophone which is difficult as I can barley estimate the range and where they are going across my bow, but Hydrophones are not that accurate so can an experience Kaleun help me out

I dont get close to anything which has guns during the night while being on surface.
Because when detected suddenly everyone knows exactly where I am and aims their damned searchlights at me for target practice for enemy warships.

I keep the distance from them on surface or waiting submerged for them.
Using hydrophones for detection and course estimation.

Could also try running "decks awash" if you're using a supermod.

running deck awash to avoid the detection as well

I actually try to stay surfaced as long as i can.
And keep checking the distance of the enemy ships. I usually ask the watch crew how far the nearest visual ship is.

''nearest warship at 5000m
''nearest warship at 4000m''

With the watch crew calling out the distance, i know if its closing in or moving away. But i always look myself too. If for example they are calling ''Nearest warship 4000'' but i see it is pointed away from me. Its okay. I'm always on the bridge. If you keep your distance from the ships, its okay.

Why do i stay surfaced. Because i have more situational awareness, and being surfaced makes you more maneuverable, i can change course real fast, and change speed. If i feel i'm gonna get detected. I can change course and speed real fast.
If you are submerged. You lose the maneuverable. I only dive when needed.

I don't know the exact detection range. But when they are around 5000m away. I'm careful.

Gets increasingly difficult as the war progresses. In real life the surfaced attack got too hard in 1943. In game this seems to occur a bit earlier, but it depends on the mod.

You're supposed to figure out the general heading and speed that they're following and then plot an intercept point that you can reach before them.

Then when you get there, submerge and wait for them to come to you.
