Which 3D modelling program to use?

Hey there, so I would like to try my hand at 3D modeling for SH3. Would like to import into blender, but none of the files from sh3 seem to be compatible, are there other 3D modeling programs people would recommend?

You cannot import Silent hunter dat files directly to blender or any other 3d modlling program, you are missing a step, You will need to download S3D by Skawajer and learn how the the games assets are setup, (its not too complicated) but think of this program like the middle man between Silent Hunter and Blender.
In S3d you can open up SH3s Dats and extract 3d files as .obj and import them in to blender - and likewise import new 3d .objs back in to an SH3
You can find S3d in the mods section of Subsim.
Good luck.

Thank you! Just got S3D last night, messed around with it a little to try and quickly familiarize myself with it, really the goal is to try and make an early version of a VIIC, with net cutter, breakwaters by the gun, and no wind breaker on the turm.
So I would need to export the whole .dat file as an .obj?

When you familiarize yourself with the Silent 3ditor program, you will see that the file .dat consists of many small 3D models

That they do! Was able to do some work in blender last night, and was able to make the splash deflector into one unit, and mount it to the turm. Though the texture was missing. Did add the texture in blender and tried to add the new one into S3D but got a selectedindex error. Will have to fiddle around some more.
