Long range shots with steam torpedos
has anyone experimented with long range (8000-14000m) shots in wolfpack? I just tried a salvo on a seemingly slow convoy (8kts) that I kept on my starboard quarters around 9000m and did not hit anything and they dispersed. I had all torpedo related checkboxes for reloading and failures. Wish there was a way to at least know if a torpedo struck at right angles but was a dud (torpedo impact angle report from the game). Oh well, back to Hardegen's 650m :D

I know that it's possible to achieve hits at that sort of range is possible, as I've been aboard uboats where it's been done. The problem is ranging. Our skipper will range 1 ship, hitting the ships further in that are in adjacent columns, most distant first, obviously. Columns of ships are 600m apart, so having ranged a ship on the column nearest, each subsequent target (600m further away) has it's moment of firing changed by estimated by the 1st range plus 600m relative to the NEXT target, rather than ranging every ship. This has the advantages that there's less maths to do provided all your fired torpedoes are running at the same speed, and, whilst your TOI (time of impact) may not be correct, the spacing of the shots should nevertheless cause 4-5 simultaneous hits, even at considerable range. This is because the range only affects if a torpedo will reach the target at a given speed, and the timing of the hit, it does not affect the probability of it - unless limited accuracy is turned on. So that's one method of hitting at great range. Of course you have less options for selecting high tonnage ships. There may be other methods. One difficulty with the method outlined above is that the row of ships will have a different aspect by the time long-running torpedoes, meaning that you may end up with a row of 4 well-spaced ships AOB 045, which become AOB 85 by the time your 4 spaced shots arrive. This can lead to several torpedoes hitting the same ship at intervals....

Make sure when you use salvo settings to set your length correct. common mistake when firing 2 torp salvo to set the length to be equal to the targets length. This can lead to misses because the length is used to calculate the spread angle based on the distance. so if you range it wrong have the length to be exactly the targets length your torps will go in front and one behind the target. When doing 2 torp salvos the length should be less than target length. Quote:

If it hits but say it was a faulty torpedo dud, then the impact angle were fine. if it says it failed to detonate due to impact angle then the torpedo were fine. |

well gents its time to practice some more then :D |
Long range steam shots are possible. But like Fidd explained.
Needs a lot of good calculations. :Kaleun_Salute: |
