Should I get GWX right away?

Hi all! I just bought SH3 as my first sub sim. Do you recommend installing GWX right away, or should I get acquainted with the vanilla game first? The GWX feature list is very impressive.

Also, is there any other mods or maps you'd recommend for me starting out?

Cheers!

Hi Timn you have a PM Sir that should help you get squared away

yes, I recommend to install and play with GWX right away.

If you start from beginning of war ("Happy Times") than you will get acquainted anyway. No worries.

If you start with vanilla SH3 first and move to GWX, GWX 3.0 would need to start a new career. So it is better to start with GWX right away.

There is great benefit to first using Stock SH3 for a few runs though. Doing so enables you to see what sort of work has been carried out by the GWX dev team in a comparative way.

Without running Stock SH3, you'll never have that understanding.

There is also a lot of info in GWX manual.
Very good game manual I must say.

Definitely so, as the differences are immeasurable and improves the SH3 massively:Kaleun_Salute:

I can survive game crashes, those corrupted savegames are far worse problem.

Absoluteley agree with this.

Vanilla is OK

I did a career in vanilla before launching into GWX and it's not so bad. The game won all those awards for a reason. The main annoyances I remember were the incessant air attacks. A lot of the mods are eye candy which is not so interesting for me. recommend playing through the training missions in any case as the learning curve is very steep (especially when to use absolute versus relative bearings).

If you have all the mods installed correctly the crashes are just a minor annoyance, but they never go away completely. Save to a new file name every time something interesting is about to happen. i get more crashes because I'm running the game using Wine under Linux and the stability seems to come and go as the linux kernel and wine get updated. The new pipewire linux audio system has definitely been a backward step!
It's a good idea to go for OneAlex GWX as he has done all the hard work installing lots of mods for you and there's minimal messing about. If you do it yourself you will probably mess up and only find out part way through your career. The main gripe with GWX is the "laser guided" escorts which all suddenly attack you when you hit your first target.

I'm cuirrently running NYGM because my laptop can't handle the graphics for the latest mod compilations and the escort behaviour is a lot better. i think that's down to better sensor parameters.
