This 16m high cylindric tower aquarium in a Berlin hotel, Dom Aquarée, has burst. It was the biggest of its kind wordwide. Its not damaged as the firedepartment still twitters and it does not leak - it has burst and is emptied. The building ha sbeen evacuated, the static needs to be exmnained, the water spilled on the streets and has caused some real mess. Plus: we have had temperatures -8 to -10 degrees this night.

Just seen this on our news who are stating two people were injured by glass shards.

1500 exotic fishes dead.

I wonder how this happened.. tension of the plexi/acrylic glass cylinder too high, but how? :o
We had lower temperatures two years ago :hmmm:

My bet would be simply material fatigue. The low temperatures do not reach into the building - if they would, guest would have complained I'm sure.:D I read some guests report they heard a loud bang, thinking of it as an explosion. This is not to say there was a bomb explosion, but indicates to me that it was the acryl glass wall cracking up, not some frozen pipe in the underground

Poor fishes. Amongst them were some bigger fishes, and even small mantas.

They say they were lucky that it was early morning and the lobby was almost empty, so that nobody got slain. The glass pieces that rained down from up to 25 meters are 20 cm thick. You do not want to get hit by these. Guests say the building was shaking like during a big seismic event. The tank must have opened up explosively, says the fire service, not starting with a small leak, but "exploding". 1 million liters of salt water.

Earthquake stations recorded the bang. :o

They probably thought something fishy was going on.

But still bad, i heard they had a ray in it that usually swims 20 miles a day.
Had a huge seawater aquarium once, anything in it else than corals and small crayfish and such, is animal cruelty in my book.

I myself also like salmon. Especially with a certain burger-sauce :haha:

Those roofs (both buildings hold water installations, the other has an aquarium with an aquatic tunnel in it) look quite non-transparent to me. If so, no sunlight, no UV. The cylinder that bursted, was in the left building.

"Some dozen" fishes survived in the lowest part of the bursted cylinder holding some water back, it gets reported. Also, four to five hundred fishes in breeding tanks in the basement also survived.

Last week, the giant aquarium Aquadom in Berlin burst. A disaster for the fish living in it and the hotel Radisson Blu. According to an expert however a disaster with announcement. The former owner of the company "Schuran Seawater Equipment," Hermann Schuran, told the "Bild" newspaper: "This is a time bomb." It is not possible to say in general how long such an aquarium will last, he said. "There are calculation examples with 25 years."

The Aquadom got approval more than 20 years ago. It should have been said at the time of construction that the dome would not last forever, Schuran said. The Dutchman also had the project on his desk at the time, but turned it down.

Schuran continued, "The whole aquarium would have had to be heated to 80 degrees with a furnace after construction and later after renovation." He added that this was costly, but if it was not done, stress cracks could develop in the glass. He explained to the "Bild" newspaper, "As an operator, you have such a structure checked at least every two years. Otherwise, it's negligent."

As "Bild" further reports, the special permit to inspect the structure at the time did not include any specific regulations. However, it is said to have included the obligation that "the owner and operator, regularly inspect the condition of the structure and its individual parts."

Most recently, the Aquadome was refurbished without dismantling until the summer of 2020 at a cost of 2.6 million euros. Two years later, it broke.
