Russia is part of the west and should be a partner or even Allie by now in dealing with real cultural, economic, and military threats to us like those in the middle east and from China.

That's not particularly true. We did give Russia assistance. We provided funding and technical assistance. We helped Russia develop their natural resources as well. The U.S and other countries made capital investments in Russia. I believe much of that capital was stolen. Admittedly, I don't think we did enough. I don't believe we should have expanded NATO east ward either. However, have you noticed that the people in the various ministries within Russia all have hundreds of millions of dollars socked away in banks accounts in Switzerland and other places.
There is no way these people made that kind on money from their jobs and positions. What Putin and others around him have done is steal the revenue from oil exports and others and use an eye dropper to distribute funds to build and maintain an infrastructure there in Russia.
People there are poor and kept that way so, it isn't very much different from the old Soviet Union. The people in Russia, like everywhere else in the world, yearn for a little bit of comfort, security and happiness. I think they deserve it as well.
