IJN radar

FOTRSU 1.7
This patrol (Nov - Dec '43; north of Hokkaido) I've run into 2 convoys where the escorting DE detached and made a beeline for my location even though we were out of visual range, but within radar range. I'm surfaced.
I assume the DE picked me up on radar? If so why didn't my APR-1 give a warning?

Do you in fact have APR-1? What boat are you in, from where, and what was the date of sailing? The APR also does not give a noise warning of any sort. Depending upon what other mods you have loaded, you might see a "line", very similar to the sonar line, and maybe a text message display of "Radar signals detected, sir." and that's about it. If there are more messages, they will scroll off the screen, and you might not see the text. If you have "450_MoonlightzSonarLines" activated, you might notice that the line is colored a dark green, difficult to differentiate from the black sonar line.

It was offered when I returned from the previous patrol, early Nov 1943. USS Balao.
I "bought" the equipment at the refit screen, confirmed that it was mounted on the equipment menu mid-patrol.
No line, no text warning.

Still checking on the APR functionality - I do suspect an issue, but part 2 of the above is that most of the DE and DD do not get good radar until 1944 or later. A few other ships have a good one in last quarter of 43, but mostly the larger ships. We'll let you know something about the APR later today, I hope. If you had your radar on, and they had a radar detector, they can beeline on you using that. I have not gotten that far to see if they have similar on the DE and chasers yet.

When using radar and tracking a convoy, you sweep to get a location, then turn the radar off. Several minutes later, turn it back on and sweep again, and get their location. Turn it off. A few minutes later, same thing, and you might be able to establish base course and speed. Do a partial run around move, and do the occasional radar sweep and double-check your readings, turning the radar off between sweeps. Just like with the visual sensor, the other sensors work similarly in that if a given condition lasts long enough, the "enemy" goes into the "alert" status, and then they attempt to target you, instead of the other way around. The later into the war you go, the more important partial use of radar is important, including the SD, if you are attempting to be "stealthy". Just another reason to have an APR that functions correctly...

Thanks for the advice. Guess I gotta get used to not leaving the radar on lol.
