How much is a knot?
Hello,
I know IRL a knot is the 1 nmi/h, which equals roughly to 1.852 km/h. The nautical mile (nmi) being 1' of arc at the equator, and that distance in SH5 being 2 km according to Alpheratz's tutorial, how much is a knot in SH5? 1,852 km/h or 2 km/h? |

The Silent Hunter map is an equirectangular projection by its properties. Since the SH5 map is the SH5 World, one minute of arc of any parallel and any meridian in the SH5 world is exactly 2 kilometers. At the same time, the speed log reading must be multiplied by 1.852 km to find out your speed in kilometers per hour. All these facts get along well together in the silent hunter world and do not interfere with navigation.:Kaleun_Wink: |
Perfect, thanks for the answers.

And indeed with actual knots it did start. Back from the days of the log, when a block of wood was thrown off the back of the ship tied to a line that had numerous knots tied in it. And timing how many knots slipped through your hand in a particular period of time was an indication of speed.
