Greetings from a complete novice
 

I picked up Silent Hunter 4 for $5 at the weekend, and now I'm in charge of a submarine!

I have no idea what all these dials and buttons do. There's a machine that goes "ping". It's a bit overwhelming how much is involved in playing this game. A lot of the posts I've seen explain how to make the game harder with something called a "mod". Am I in over my head? Is it possible to hold down a full time job AND learn how to play this?

Many have before you and no doubt many will after you.
