Why are brothels illegal (in most of the US)?

But with the last sentence in that essay being "Brothels need not exist in a free society, but their absence should not result from governments’ having made them illegal", all mods I assume can now relax a bit again.

I don't know why some comnunities would ban the oldest profession.

I lived on 'dry' island inhabited by a very small community of a devout religious kind of people. Outwardly proclaiming the evils of drugs and booze. It had one of the highest rates of drug and alchohol abuse in the State.

I'm all in favor of legalized brothels ;)

Many years ago (before my time of course) brothels were legal in Texas.

Remember the movie "Best Little Whore House in Texas" was based on a true story by a reporter for a Houston newspaper who had them busted.

A brothel can not be legal due to laws enacted by the good people of any given community, plus it's a health problem and a human trafficking problem at the same time.

A place like Amsterdam is not going to happen in the USA. They do have legal prostitution in Nevada, but it is limited to rural counties on rural ranches and is the only state that I know of.

Prostitution is however alive and well in the USA from one end to the other end.

I remember a big scandal at my local catholic school when I was about 12, it was run by the local nuns who didn't take any prisoners when it came to down to any defiance or misbehaviour by us pupils.
One year about 10 of them went to Africa on some kind of nun exchange type system for 6 months or thereabouts, 7 of them came back bleeding pregnant, the shame of the nuns forsaking their vows forced the local council to take over the running of it. :haha: So much for morality eh. :O:

If communities support issuing clean needles and safe places for heroine addicts. So these drug abusers can shoot up in safety and without fear of arrest or prosecution.

Think what kind of safety a well run and regulated brothel would provide for the ladies and their clients. And think about all that tax revenue! You could build a free day care center next door where poor single dads drop their kids off on Friday date nights.

Do it for the children, do it for all those lonely single fathers. Vote YES for Brothels.

The reason for it being illegal (in my opinion) is partly that it is morally wrong and it is a place where a LOT of major criminals would go to for services. Brothels can be a hub for human and drug trafficking as well as other illegal activities.

I would say no to brothels.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that it is wrong.

That is the equivalent of murdering somebody and telling the police:
"Well, its the oldest crime in the world so that must make it right!"

Has that woman ever read the Bible before? I would hope so because any religious person would know that God absolutely detests prostitutes and any sexual immoral sin.

Giving bad girls and place to live, clean themselves up, help them find a job and find Jesus is a great thing but that wouldn't be the person I would choose to do it.

Also, if you are quoting a Biblical verse, I would like to know the exact location of it because I am absolutely certain that you are taking it out of context.

In Canada, you have a strange situation where solicitation and "pimping" is illegal, but prostitution itself is not if carried on by an "independent" adult sex worker, so in Montreal, you have websites openly advertising "escorts" or "sugar babies".

Police do not crack down or prosecute, unless the girls are minors or violence is involved, since the law is so ambiguous.
