Happy 70th birthday, Mr. Karpov

Not the most loved one, but one of the best chess technicians of all time. Mercilessly clean technique. Never searching for sensations and action drama, this perfection was what earned him the reputation of being "boring". Well, not really. :03: I sometimes wondered what style he would have played if having been raised outside the Soviet party patronage and its obedient FIDE president. Probably also a fantastically good player, no doubt, but in playing style maybe: different... I still remember the 144 matches marathon he ran against Kasparov. I was still at school during that "event"... It took me until three years ago that I studied my first book ever that was written by Karpov. :) |
