Are you smart enough to be an astronaut?

Here is a small sampling of the cognitive tests that ESA astronauts are asked during their training.

What's the answer and more importantly, why is that answer correct?

B.
B?
:hmmm:

Buddahaid 04-15-21 05:22 PM

I think B would be the answer because it doesn't match any of the others in arrangement or shading.

According to the website, you have to explain why you selected your answer.

B. The grid pattern is that the colors stay in the same places but all four shapes have to be different than the grids on either side. Only choice B meets both of those requirements, vertically, horizontally and diagonally.

No!

I am certain the answer is "B", but I'm taking the reasoning for the answer to my grave...

Somehow, I think I would have made a very poor astronaut candidate; I have this proclivity to look at a panel of buttons/levers and say, "Hey, I wonder what this one does...?..."...

Empiricism is not a good trait for a task that involves sticking to a set of precisely choreographed actions...

B

To me, in each box, running left to right, the left hand shapes and the right hand shapes switch side and colours. Then switch back again..... if that makes sense.

But I’m smart enough to not want to be an astronaut. :D

Catfish 04-16-21 05:23 AM

What if it's not your decision.. and the name's not astronauts.

Dowly 04-16-21 12:27 PM

B?

The shapes and colors alternate, only B matches horizontally, vertically and diagonally.

Catfish 04-16-21 12:52 PM

While i posted it should be 'b', there would be another possibility.

Making the case for 'd' it is the only one that has nothing in common with all others, which is also a solution in itself :hmmm:

Dowly 04-16-21 01:34 PM

D was my other candidate before I noticed B lines up diagonally as well. Another thing I noticed just now about B is that all the corners of the center piece supplement the shape and colors it touches outside of it.

i.e. if you put B in the center, the top left shape is black triangle. To the left of it is a light grey triangle, diagonally there's a white triangle and upwards there's a grey triangle. All four colors are touching. This is the same for the other corners of the center B.

So that's four things going for it being B. I think I'm ready to place my bet. :yep:

Catfish 04-16-21 01:52 PM

Accepted .. was there already a finnish astronaut?

Dowly 04-16-21 02:38 PM

Nah, just one with Finnish ancestry; Tim Kopra. (our media of course made a big deal about it, small country issues.)
