I didn't believe what a read the first time
that's genius but also the stupidest thing that man could do because being the sole officer responsible for the safety of a decommissioned ship all responsibility in on him

More of the pension thing, the ship was being converted into a museum and the Captain decided to get some sweet retirement money going by swapping the bronse screw with a cheaper imitation, while selling the bronse.
