Live Stream The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn
 

I know there are a number of amateur astronomers here in Subsim. I know there are others here that are far more than amateur here as well. I knew of the great Gas Giants, Saturn and Jupiter being in a rough alignment which hasn't happened since the middle ages.



Sadly, if you're like me, the skies are overcast and practically impossible to see this galactic spectacle. Fortunately, There are web site devoted to hosting viewing this in real time. The planets are also viewable with a good camera with zoom capabilities.

I was in Florida when my brother called asking if I saw the 'star'. Told him I forgot about it, but went outside to look. Pretty kewl but looking around I thought Mars, Procyon and Rigel were much more remarkable. :)

Whilst readily admitting I'm not really into astronomy I can say I enjoyed what you posted CW.

When I was in college, We had 2 excellent instructors / professors in the Astronomy program. Both had retired from NASA and one was part of the Jet Propulsion Labs with NASA. I wanted to take the Astronomy courses with them but it was outside my field of discipline. Further, I was very pushed for time as my studies were very labor intensive and there just wasn't enough time in the day.

I always regretted not having availed myself of the opportunity to learn and study with the best in their respective fields. I never had telescopes of a good enough quality to view planets like Saturn and Jupiter and for me, It would be an incredible thrill to view them myself.

I'm glad you enjoyed it my friend. I know we have some very sharp people here at Subsim who are educated in the various Sciences and Astronomy, who might enjoy this. Rockin Robbins comes to mind.

While it's true the alignment will have little impact on Earth, The immense gravitational pull of Jupiter and Saturn helps to keep asteroids and meteors from moving into our inner solar system and taking aim at our planet not to mention our newly redone patio deck. :03:

You never know, the concentrated gravity field might pull something from the Kuiper Belt loose and send it towards the Sun. :hmmm:

I think NASA thinks the same as you as they have scopes trained out to detect errant Asteroids in the vicinity of Earth. Question is, what will they do if they spot one on a collision course with Earth? :hmmm:
