Newbie from Aces- no call outs from watch crew

Gday gang,

Thanks to covid and my new found spare time, I’ve started playing all of my old games again. I’ve played Aces forever and now started playing SH3. Getting the hang of it. The while fatigue thing is pain but found SH3 Commander a god send for that.

I’m just wondering it seems that SH3 unlike Aces, the watch crew don’t call out aircraft or ships. Is this normal or am I missing something? Does compressed time vs normal time a difference?

Cheers

welcome aboard!

time compression can mess up your game if it goes too high. if it's too high your watch crew won't call out contacts until you're gettin' blown outta da water.

Yes time compression isn't handled as well as in Aces. But the watch crew can be idiots for various reasons too.
What is your game install; i.e., just the stock game or is it modded, etc. ?

I had nice example yesterday: Full complement on deck while trailing a convoy ---> we are under attack!

Wait wut? Destroyer at 2000mt on rage mode : crash dive and still blew up my deck gun.

Ok he had radar, but still....... LOL:k_confused:

Escort/aircraft radar isn't handled as well as in Aces either. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I'm using SH3Commander v3.20.203 with SH3 v1.4 downloaded from Steam this week.

What is the highest compression level I can use that the look outs are useable?

TC affects aircraft more than lookouts; above 256x you won't get aircraft. So myself that's as high as I go and lookouts work fine at that level for "unexpected" contacts, i.e.
If I'm hunting a convoy but haven't visibly spotted them yet, 8-16x max for me.
Also if you're not, be sure to have a watch qualified officer and petty officer together on the bridge lookout crew. You can get by with just a qualified officer but both is better.
Crew abilities also improve with experience.
I'll add that I'm not using 1.4 but modded NYGM and GWX installs.
