Once in a while...

TMO aircraft remind you what vicious buggers they are.

April 23 1944 Luzon Strait (Convoy College area)

On surface trying to locate a convoy (ULTRA contact). SD radar, which typically has been detecting aircraft at 12 NM failed for some reason. Did not detect a Betty until at 5 NM. In fact. Lookouts spotted it first(!) . Plane was flying low and fast, closing. Of course made emergency dive. As passed 110 feet explosions rocked boat. Damage in forward torpedo room causing minor flooding. Damaged forward tubes (5 and 6 heavily damaged) Forward battery and stern battery, cutting battery capacity down to 75 percent, JP sonar, WCA sonar stack, Trimp pump damaged.

Leveled off at 200 feet. Leaks stopped situation looking better than suddenly 3 more big explosions close. Flooding in after torpedo room. No 2 and 4 electric engine heavily damaged (85 %)

Now at 300 feet. Boat is safe, but repairing damage instead of looking for convoy
