An acting legend. His structural perfection was matched only by his talent. May he rest in peace.

Alien...! Finally I get it, I always thought about Bilbo that I had seen the face before and that he looked familiar, but I could never make the link to his appearance as the android - Ash was the name, I think? - in that movie. It always makes a pleasurable sound inside the head when this coin finally drops.

That's interesting. I never made the connection (until I read his bio) between Bilbo Baggins and Father Vito Cornelius of the Fifth Element. Great character actor.

RIP Sir Ian.

Ian Holm has been an actor I really liked ever since his role as Ash in Alien so many years ago.

He usually played minor characters, but one of my favourite movies with him was one where he actually had a starring role, the "The Sweet Hereafter" where he played an unscrupulous lawyer trying to take advantage of a tragedy. With a lesser actor, it could have been a caricature, but he managed to play the character with all its nuances.

He was particularly good as Napoleon Bonaparte in 2001'sThe Emperor's New Clothes https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...%282001%29.jpga retake on the post-Waterloo fate of the Emperor. Holms plays both the escaped Napoleon and Napoleon's imposter imprisoned on St Helena.
