Avoidance

Ahoy!
So, I understand that one way of trying to escape the dreaded escorts is to exploit their `wasserbomb` . Just clarify how/ when to do this :- do I wait for the charge to detonate before executing a manoeuvre or when my soundman tells me that a `wasserbomb` has been launched?

As soon as they drop, and your sonarman says it, hit your RPMS and maneuver! Keep up speed until the explosion ends!

I bought the game off Steam about a week ago and am in February 1940. The big disappointment with the game so far is I am always the cat and never the mouse. SH III did this so well.

I’ve yet to be attacked by a destroyer. I’m hoping that this is some cartoony way of putting across ‘happy times’. Do they get any better? Do aircraft become more aggressive? I’ve learned to just let them fly over. I’m getting into bad habits! In SH III I’d be down the hatch at the first sniff of an aircraft. If they didn’t attack you they’d certainly alert the authorities.

Do you have TWoS and "proper" realism options turned on? Im on 3rd patrol and i dont complain on lack of action :yep:

Compans57 04-25-20 09:54 AM

n0mjaS....no I'm playing the stock game. I'd like some mods like you describe but I'm not keen on megamods. From what I've seen there's 'fixes' for a lot of the graphics which I think are just fine in the stock game. In particular I'm talking about water, sky etc which I think is great in the stock game. Am I wrong about this? Can I make a separate install for twos and keep the stock game too? I'm playing off Uplay. If not is the mod easy to uninstall and get back to vanilla?

The original game is terrible... some may say unplayable! Get TWoS!

I'm convinced. The vanilla game is lame. But will Twos change the basic environment graphics and is it easy to uninstall if I don't like it?

Could someone post a link or an explanation of which download link to get and an install explanation with Steam/Uplay? I've googled this but a lot of the links are old. I don't want to install in the wrong way.

My monitor is 1280 X 1024. Will this work?

I've recently returned to SH5 and TWoS. I've not played in years, so I may as well be re-learning everything from scratch. Here's some notes I've thought about

TWoS Makes the game particularly challenging, not only does it give the player more UI to learn and deal with, it also increases the damage you take from enemies, how smart they are, etc etc. AFAIK it also decreases your own performance as well (Things repair slower, deck gun does less damage, etc.)

In terms of actual fighting, TWoS gives you a TDC UI, which is nice (wish it was bigger, looks quite small on a 4k screen) but it's functionally the same as the base game, where instead of telling your XO what the stuff is, you can input it right into the new TDC UI.

So far I've actually been able to evade DDs pretty easily, normally by the time they realise I'm there, I'm far gone from where they think I am, and I end up in no/low danger.

My overall opinion is positive, you might need to watch the odd YT video on how all the new UI works, but I'm going to leave it installed, as TWoS has some mods in it that fix gameplay issues present in the base game, as well as change campaign objectives away from GRT requirements to "Patrol here, fight stuff and don't die till <date>, then do something else" which is a much better objective.

Edit:

There are fixes you can install to get TWoS working correctly with a number of aspect ratios:

When installing TWoS make sure you have a fresh install, no other mods. If so, its best just to delete the entire game folder and redownload from scratch. If you're using Steam, there's an automatic patcher required for steam, but it's literally a <yes> button and that's it. TWoS runs on an installer, which self extracts and installs the mod, requiring user input only once with the patcher, but that's explained on the PDF which you can get on the DL page.

TWoS includes an environment mod, which makes things look nicer.

When uninstalling, you basically need to just delete your game install and redownload from scratch, it's a pretty small game anyway.

Thanks Jaiden.

Yes I got the mod last night. There's a lot of learning and detail which I'll have to get used to but it certainly makes for a better game. Cheers for the help.
