The Making of "Das Boot"

In case anyone hasn't seen this, very interesting. In German.

I have watched Das Boot so many times I can’t count. Never saw this! Great stuff! I read the book, and Peterson really drew out the spirit of the book with only a few small changes. If you haven’t yet, read the book!

John,

Nice find. The Director's cut has a brief making of, this is more flushed out.

Good hunting,

Yes, I thought it very interesting; all the detail , work, and skill that went into pre-CGI special effects.

Another tidbit; if I recall correctly, the scene where the watch crew member almost got washed overboard was not scripted.
It really was an accident and he really was injured.

Glad everyone enjoyed it and yes, as bstanko says the book too is great. Everyone should have Buchheim's "U-Boat War" too.

i guess you all speak german lol

John Pancoast 01-13-20 09:41 PM

Some. But I found it interesting anyway; it's not hard to understand what is going on in the various scenes regardless of the language.

Don’t understand German, except very few word, but anyway it’s not a blockade to watch this excellent video !
Anything related to iconic Das Boat is worth watching it
On side note i saw once Das Boat in full German language and i also loved it :)
It was even more realistic!

Yes, he had one or two ribs broken, iirc.

Also worth mentioning that such events happened in reality quite often too, in October 1941 the whole bridge watch was washed overboard on U-106 during a severe storm.
It was only noticed when the peplacement watch entered the bridge.

It was only noticed when the replacement watch entered the bridge.

That is sad!
Some storm to break their safety lines!

I recall once reading an account of a crewman who was on deck doing some maintenance chore, when the sub dived because of enemy action. After several hours of being submerged the came up again and failed to find him. He was, against all odds, picked up by another U-boat that happened by.
