Most improbable sinking
2. Raiding a harbor in Palau, I stopped engines, raised the fore periscope, and fired a snap shot at the LMT just ahead. Too late, I realized the selector was still on Tube 7, from when I'd considered a stern shot from the aft 'scope. Cursing the wasted torp, I went back to work on the tanker. Just before that torpedo struck home, a crewmember called out "torpedo impact!" - it was the medium freighter 90 degrees on my starboard beam on the other side of the harbor I'd apparently locked on to. I was pretty surprised, but on the next patrol...
1. Impatiently awaiting an onrushing DD for a down-the-throat shot, I advanced the TC one too many times instead of reducing it while maneuvering to starboard at maximum angle and minimum speed. The DD came in at high speed, hitting us a glancing blow that almost rolled the sub, and really ringing the ship's bell. When I heard the breaking up noises, I thought it was game over, but we hadn't lost a single hull point, only some minor damage to the AA and deck guns. The DD was nowhere to be seen, aside from an outline on the map. What's yours? |
