Resupply in Spain

Maybe posted before, but this page is interesting. Note that torpedoes were only supplied twice the entire war, only by the Thalia.
Normal resupply was only fuel, lubricants, food, etc.

Thanks for the information Great sources.

Yeah, I've quit using these ships for resupply as in the game you always get torpedoes too.

Thanks, good find. What about the U-Tankers? I imagine it pretty difficult to transfer torpedoes form one boat to the other on the open sea.

Haven't found similar detailed info. on them yet. Need Stiebler from NYGM back here; he wrote a book on them.

It was difficult but is was doable and was done several times, even between u-boats (ex: Type VIIc and a IX). One was returning but had torpedoes to spare and the other was going on patrol and already had shoot a few.

One method that was recorded in photos was rapping a torpedo with the live-jackets/escape apparatus so it would float (or at least help the torpedo not sink) and cables.

Interesting. From a tactical point of view extremely dangerous as it will bind two boats for quite a while and make them vulnerable.

It was done in the middle of no where, so the chances of problems were very slim.

Not that it mattered; via code breaking, etc. the Allies sunk every U-tanker anyway.

Speaking of resupply at sea.....

At around 2:40 in the first video they show how they transferred torpedoes. They attached buoys for support at the front and the back of the torpedo and roped them from one boat to the other. Apparently they could mount a small crane close to the tower of the boat to pull them out of the sea. I assume the triggers were removed for that operation.

Don't know, but I bet the triggers weren't even attached until a torpedo was going into a tube.
