Pilot rescue mission questions

While conducting a pilot rescue mission, I rescued perhaps a dozen pilots some distance from the mission's star location but never got a mission completed message, nor could I find the total number of pilots I had rescued.

Is there any method to determine how many pilots CINCPAC "sees" as rescued?
Is there a maximum radius from the star symbol for mission completion? :hmmm:
