How to sink Kirov?

Hi,
Did You test the 5th mission (Beating the odds) in Single Player?
If not, try it.
It's an armageddon. :ping:

If You launch Harpoons, every will be shot down by flak (or 80%), few minutes ago You will have 5-6 torpedos near You, if You escape be prepar to be detected by planes or helicopters and new set of torpedos? I did this mission 8 times till now I suppose, max I survived near 1 hour but all missions was a death machine :hmmm: .
Any sugestions for this mission?

For sure, if I launched Harpoons I escaped immediately, I tested with set of Mk.48 also but if Soviet fleet detect them they start to move immediately.
:salute:

Well in DW there is the same problem,,, but by accident I got some licks in on the Kirov,, you got to be some what close and undetected must have visual with scope,, you light him up with a Torp as she turns and runs from the torp and shows her stern you send your harpoons it's all in the timing ,, I just thought of if you can get in behind her on a track you might get a shot in ,,, coming in from the stern = less flak

Here you go.

Hard difficulty. 1.01b. All mods disabled (except that I forgot that I left MAD sensors at 400 but they don't matter here anyway).

PS. Sorry for bad quality - I have limited space on my hard drive ;)

Thx, watched Today, will try Your technique. I used Mk.48 but with active sonar from the beginning, maybe it was the fault.

Great video. Tactics wise, what is the idea behind raising the ESM mast? Is it just to see whether there are helicopters and planes around?

Yes. You can't be sure where they are exactly, but my reasoning is, if the line comes at a big angle from the main group it could be close.

Thanks!
If you would see helicopters and/or planes, what would your reaction be? I'm still pretty bad at handling them so looking to see how other people do it :)

If they haven't detected you yet, I'd sit at silent mode, perhaps change course just in case and wait for them to leave.
If they have found you, all I could do is to fire all torpedoes (trying to predict their evasions), go flank speed and avoid helicopter's torpedoes. After that you can asses the situation (did any of your torpedoes hit, what are the closest threat etc) and act accordingly.

Great, thanks again!

I saw in the patch notes that MAD range is at 1000 yards. So I'm assuming this means that if a plane flies directly over you, you basically have no chance at all of avoiding it right?

tirta 06-13-17 08:47 AM

if there is helicopter or plane drops torpedo very near or right on top of your sub, does it mean it has already detected you or just guessing?

YoYo 06-13-17 09:36 AM

Harpoon, did You record any others vidoes from others missions (for example 6th with Moscow)? It will be nice to see. Btw. if You have Win 10 You can use settings for better quality (60 fps and better resolution) and You can record it Win+Alt+R. This tool is build-in Windows 10, its free.

yes, this 5th mission (Beating the odds) is very hard.
I have played it a few times, sometimes I sunk Kirov, sometimes I did not.
however, in the end I always get hit.

always, usually after I fire some torpedos away,
then, out of nowhere, there's a torpedo dropped right above my sub.
my speed is <=5 knots and I stay below thermal layer (if any).

what is wrong here?
how do you stay undetected?

It is hard, my first two attempts ended in failure because aircraft found me. It was easier being in the inlet, the aircraft stay out (whether they would in real life is a moot point). Also the water is deeper in there. I stayed not moving or at 5 knots almost on the bottom and used all my torpedoes and at the very end two missiles. I also used all my moss decoys to cause confusion as to my position.

1000 yards is the lateral range, so the radius around the airplane that it can detect targets. The MAD is effective to approximately 500 ft deep.

Yes, they have found you haha.

Good work, but how did they not send aircraft down your bearing? That's what is reliably killing me in this mission.
