CO2 bug

I have encountered a bug where after diving deep to evade destroyers, my CO2 keeps climbing instead of venting when surfaced. Is there a fix for this? There doesn't seem to be a post on this topic. Now there is.

Hello Delfi,
This is a well known problem with the game when it was developed. It normally happens when you 'ALT+Tab' to leave the game to look at something else on your computer and sometimes when your computer drops you out of the game. But there is an easy solution to fix this. First save your game, exit the program and restart. After loading the save, the co2 problem will be be fixed. If I may, I suggest reading this topic by Capn Scurry,[TEC] Windows10; Large Address Aware; SH4 Install And of course here is another link that may help,http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=219029 by the THEBERBSTER, which has a wealth of knowledge. Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Saving and reloading did work. It's a pain, but not as much of a pain as losing a sub to a bug. I was about to shoot the guy standing in front of the christmas tree and not opening the vents for treason. I didn't want that bug to be the end of a well executed attack and evasion.

It was a large convoy. I got the tanker and shook the escorts. Didn't want to have to do it again with a worse setup.

The Alt/Tab keystroke is a Windows feature to allow you to leave a running program and return to desktop. The issue for SH4, its been blamed for all sorts of issues and developing problems, some unjustified.

You may think I'm for the Alt/Tab feature.....I am not!! Nowhere does the game suggest you can/should use the feature. It's not in the "Manual" or in their Keyboard Layout descriptions, so don't use it!!

To that end, I never Alt/Tab out of the game. If I wish to return to the desktop I end my game and Exit to Windows as the game provides. My point is, I too have had the Co2 bug hit and nothing stopped it from killing my crew as I tried everything I could think of to reduce the continuing buildup of Co2 in the sub. Once the Co2 begins to build, your surfaced, and the level continues to climb, your only solution is to save the game, Exit to Windows, and restart your game as Larrywb57 describes.

By the way Delfi, Welcome to SubSim!!

I'm not sure you actually have to exit all the way back to Windows. I have done the Save, and then immediately reloaded that Save Game numerous times with success. But of course going back to Win and restarting the game can't hurt if that is a preference.

Doing the "Save" and then "Load" does work sometimes for the CO2 issue, but sometimes not, and in that case you do have to exit the game in order to get things to re-set.

Once the game has been "trashed" like that, there will be other aspects that don't function correctly either, so I'd also advise re-starting the game. Lots of times, no issue, but... Of course, you've got that "Save" to go back to.

There also seems to be a bug where if you save in shallow water your sub will take damage next time you load that save. Sometimes this is accompanied by a splashing sound like a dropped depth charge.

Which version of SH4 have you got? Where did you purchase it from? Do you have any mods installed? How "shallow" are you talking?

Could be a bomb if there were aircraft in the area, or a mine too. Saves don't always spawn aspects of the game exactly where they were. I'd go with a mine if there weren't splashes.

Could have been a DD or DE etc you may have been unaware of. If your sensors; visual, sound, haven't picked it up, sometimes external view won't show him and he could be right on your tail.

Only time CO2 got me was when I took damage and my crew died after many hours at 26' in our mad dash back to Port - just couldn't get closer to the surface ( 16' ) no matter what I tried. This was on an earlier version of SH4.

Happy Hunting!

As stated, Alt/Tabbing in and out of the game can cause several issues ,CO2 bug, often silent running gets stuck, etc.....If you do that, it's just a matter of time for a bug. I've never gotten damage from a save or reload, but if you reload a save where you had damage, shot torps, at the beginning the reload will process all that back and you'll hear a lot of things going on..

This has happened to me in V1.3 (steam) if I save and load submerged at periscope depth.
I think it also happened once when I was surfaced, but I haven't noticed it since I got the U-boat addon which is V1.5.

Usually happens in water less than 70 feet deep. Periscope depth is 60-ish in a big boat (Gato, Balao).

If I am in shallow water, I try to come up to about ~45-54 feet (radar should be out of the water) and then save. Haven't had it happen to me since.

My best guess is that your boat is "placed" at the depth, then "released" and the physics take just a second to "kick-in" and in that time, you "bounce" off the bottom.
The extra 10-15 feet seems to help. Never any planes around when I tested it to see what was happening.
