Has anyone got a widescreen mod working on windows 10?
I've tried all of the major widescreen mods and I cannot seem to get any of them working.
If I start Silent Hunter III without compatibility I get the infamous "Can not initialize 3D Engine" even after setting my desktop resolution to 1024x768. However; I get around this by running in Windows XP SP2 compatibility which allows me to play stock or gwx. But, given I play on a 1920x1080 monitor the tiny resolution of SH3 makes it really hard to be enjoyable. Every widescreen mod I have tried crashes either at the start up the game or during the loading screen when trying to load in a campaign. I literally just re-installed windows again and the first game I installed was SH3 so this doesn't get more vanilla than this. Only mod I have loaded over GWX is Ahnenerbe WideGUI final. |
First, uninstall the WideGUI mod and see if any of the WS mods work.
I use the WideScreenMaGui + fix on a 1360x768 resolution, using W10 64 bit. Not sure about that one and a different resolution though. |

I also used the most downloaded widescreen mod and that gives the same issue. It crashes when I try to load into a new career. |
Hi thryckz
SH3 does not like Windows 10 Runs in compatibility mode Windows 7 without any problems. You must run all your .exe applications as administrators. You have a driver or GPU setting problem. Post #7 Changing Nvidia And AMD Radeon GPU Settings I am not aware of any wide screen GUI that will totally fill a 1920 x 1080 screen. This includes Ahnenerbe WideGui 1920x1080 Final LSH3-2015 Widescreen GUI + OLC GUI's Peter |

Should I just give in and play without the resolution mod? Nothing seems to work. |
Hi thryckz
Have you created your game save folder in C:\Documents\SH4 To create this you must start in the Naval Academy before starting a New Career Peter |
I got Windows 7 and I remember having trouble trying to get SH3 running after getting the 'Can not initialize 3D Engine' issue. And at the same time I tried to get it running in widescreen resolution. What solved it for me that I changed the Screen Refresh Rate to 60 Hertz in Moniter Setting under Control Panel. There probably has to be something similar to that in Windows 10.
For me its under Control Panel>Personalization>Display>Adjust Resolution then Advanced settings then the Moniter Tab. |

I'm using Win10 and the wide screen mod without problems. It's been a while since I bought the monitor and I did have a problem at first. I think it may have been running D3D9 that fixed it, or changing the D3D9.cfg to show 1920 x 1080. Of course, I may be talking out of my butt as I don't exactly recall.
Here is my d3d9 config. ; ; DX9res Settings ; by Kegetys <kegetys@dnainternet.net> ; ; Note that this config is reloaded on device reset, so you can task switch out ; of the game, change settings from this file and then return ; [config] ; ResX: Horizontal resolution setting ; ResY: Vertical resolution setting ; useFiltering: Use linear filtering for UI elements ; enableScreenshots: Hook printscreen keypress to save TGA screenshot resX=1920 resY=1080 useFiltering=1 enableScreenshots=1 screenshotPath=. [gamma] ; setGamma: Override gamma ramp ; gammaRed: Red channel gamma (1.0 = normal, decrease to add brightess, increase to darken) ; gammaGreen: Green channel gamma (1.0 = normal, decrease to add brightess, increase to darken) ; gammaBlue: Blue channel gamma (1.0 = normal, decrease to add brightess, increase to darken) setGamma=0 gammaRed=1.0 gammaGreen=1.0 gammaBlue=1.0 |

Is it wise to install GWX on top of this? What would GWX change that would be making it crash for me? Quote:
