Help using Radar

First time playing SH4. Started a new career 1941 in a Gar class. Used renown to add air search radar. No surface search radar available yet.

I am outside Pearl Harbor running on the surface to my patrol destination and cannot activate my air search radar.

The A-SCOPE station Power On/Off toggle in the 3D view does nothing. The command menu button to TURN RADAR ON/OFF does nothing.

Need help!

There is no control over, or display of, the air search radar.
The A-scope is for the surface search radar. The radar ON/OFF is for the surface search radar.

The air search radar is basically running all the time. The only thing you can do is raise or lower the mast.

Only provided he is using a mod to do so.

It is part of most, if not all, supermods. We tend to forget how stock feels like after some time.

Nice to know, thanks! :salute:

True. I've been playing this game since it was released. Very little of that was stock gameplay.

:salute: to the modders that made this game so worthwhile.

If your playing a stock game (no mods added) you'll get the SJ Surface Search radar about mid 1942. Each sub can have a bit different start time for the SJ Radar. The SD Air Search radar is usually on the boat at the start of the war.

As you found out, going to the Radar Stations (both PPI an the A-Scope) at this early date you'll find nothing works. The issue is, both of these stations work only for the SJ Surface Search Radar. If the SJ isn't installed "On Boat", the stations don't work. The developers had plans on putting "covers" over the radar station screens to show they weren't operational, but they never got around to it. So, there has always been confusion as to "Where's my radar?" when it's shown, yet they don't work.

As was pointed out, the SD Air Search Radar is considered "On" and working in the background. You can't turn it off. You'll get a report in your text message box from your Radarman/Radioman when a plane is detected. If you go to the Navigation Map (as long as you haven't enabled the option "No Map Contact Update") you'll get an icon of the plane in question showing on the map. This is the only place you'll actually "see" the planes where abouts without going outside and trying to spot it. Use your Nav Map to determine the planes direction of travel and threat.
