Westworld (Spoilers)

As a TV enthusiast always on the lookout for the next Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones/The Wire/Mad Men, I hope this one will live up to its potential. It has a great premise, looks like a major motion picture budget and effects, and a great cast (including my crush, Sidse Babett Knudsen--awesome to see her in Hollywood), and the first episode was pretty good.

I was going to post a link to an article about the show but so far, all the articles I've found really ruin the first episode, so, avoid reading about the show if you enjoy going in without knowing what is going to happen.

This thread is for discussion of the series. Since it is new, we can discuss spoilers here, so if you are not caught up, please keep that in mind. If you come across some info about future episodes or plot twists, please use the http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/imag.../spolier01.png spoiler tag, eh?

Part of the fun of a new dramatic series is a few surprises. So watch episode one before reading any further.

:yeah:

Oh, this could be interesting, the original film was done by Michael Crichton and he's pretty good at interesting plotlines.

Oh, and in before Yul Brynner. :O:

I look forward to your take on the first episode. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

Original Westworld movie, German dub, Yul Brynner provoking a shootout in the saloon:

"Er schlabbert seine Milch. Gib ihm einen Sabberlatz, damit er sich nicht bekleckert.* " (He slobbers his milk. Give him a slobber-bib, that he does not blot himself.")

:har:

I was - well, not sure, maybe 9 years or so when I saw that first time on TV. At school, us little kids were laughing for weeks about this. And in principle I still giggle until today. :)

* Yeah , I know that is not the original English translation of that scene. Its just that the German dub is way more funny.

Watched and liked. Surprised me in overall, was expecting something different, now can not say what course will the series go.

That Ed Harris character:hmmm:. 1ft thought he was a homage to Yul Brynner, then someone just looking for craziness and then...:06:.
Do not know if they are going for a AI birth and revolt or not

Fans of the film, do not expect a rehash of The Gunslinger gone amok. At least in the pilot. I was pleasantly surprised they flipped that trope.

Westworld was the first time I ever heard the term "computer virus" and it stuck with me after that. Of course, it is commonplace today.

western + science fiction, what is there not to like.

looks good so far.

spoilers:

as to how the story will evolve, I gather the robots will get more free will and independence, maybe revolt. However, if they are planning for a 3-5 years series, this should be a slow burn.

the outlier is the Ed Harris character. He scalped one of the robots after the problematic upgrade. He is presumably not there just to enjoy Dolores. So a competitor out to steal the AI secrets for a rival project? that means potential AI revolt on the entire planet not just Westworld?

Well, for others "Westworlds"? In the movie, they had several time places, the west, medieval age and roman age, so: or the company have other worlds or the competitors have those.

Agreed, I liked the twist, was not expecting that but it made the whole setup very poignant. Oh man, in this version,

the robots are the main characters, and they are oppressed. Cybernetic lives matter!

I saw the original Westworld/Futureworld movie with Yul Brynner as i was a child. And i was fearing one week every night.
:D

Yet to see the first episode but do have it saved for viewing soon.

Saw the first episode last night. Started slowly, I was about to switch to something else, but I kept going and I'm glad I did.

Also, Ed Harris!

Rhodes 10-11-16 04:04 PM

So, second episode. Any takers?

So, if they remember, they will became sentient and there goes the West?:03:
Ed Harris and the maze? Same unique story of West world creator?

Onkel Neal 10-11-16 09:06 PM

Hmm...kinda edged forward... nothing as dramatic as the first episode. I guess the new goody-cowboy will have some big moral choice to make eventfully.

Jimbuna 10-12-16 07:29 AM

Early days but hopefully episode three will be an improvement.
