The amount of noise inside a U-Boat.

I was wondering that how loud was it inside a U-Boat. Since the diesels are running 24/7 wouldn't it be awfully noisy inside? :hmmm: And how easily could you sleep in all of that

It's the co drivers that can kill you not the noise!

VERY loud! I lived almost three years on a sleeper-team eighteen- wheeler in a cabover Freightliner, with 290 Cummins diesel engine directly under the mattress(doubles as the insulation-sound barrier) in the '70's...you can easily sleep through anything! Engine on for heat in winter; AC in sweltering summer 24/7! It's wondering if your novice codriver can stay awake behind the wheel while you're napping that worries your lead-driver ass the most!! :Kaleun_Sleep:On smooth 3 day coast-to-coast trek, it's 4hr on, 4hr in the bunk, carefully noted to keep the logsheets legit. Talk about 'hot-bunking' here!

Wow, sounds pretty horrible. :o My dad was a truck driver for 20 years but he didn't have to sleep while the engine was running cos he was driving alone

Never underestimate the power of exhaustion and fatigue (to say nothing of oxygen deprivation or carbon monoxide poisoning) in helping people fall asleep in almost any condition...

Coming from a medical background, I would be more than interested to know if there are any reports on the health of the sailors who served on those boats out floating around somewhere. Combination of noise and exposure to different chemicals would make an interesting topic. :up:

I'm not sure how much noise-dampening is obtained by the hatch between the aft crew quarters and the engine room, but the crew sleeping in the torpedo room and the officer and PO bunks are more than 150 feet from the engines, so that might help.
