Missions won't complete.
I'm a long time Silent Hunter player. Started with Silent Hunter 1. Just reinstalled Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific for probably the 10th time on yet another computer. There's a problem I've been having and it never matter what version of Windows I had running at that time is sometimes even after I reached a mission's "star" it won't register as a completed mission in my log book.
I'm currently doing a patrol in the Luzon Straights. Left Manila on December 9th 1941 in a Salmon class sub. Reached the "star" by the 10th. Immediately made contact with a convoy where I sank a battleship. Still cruising around the Luzon Straight recharging batteries after dodging a few destroyers. Darn program just won't give me a completed mission. This isn't the first time this has happened either. I've patched the game to version 1.4. I know there's a 1.5 patch if you want the German U-boat missions, but I'm not working right now, can't afford to get that....even if that would fix this bug. Anyone else run into this issue? |

When you're sent to a position to patrol, you have to stay within x miles of the marker for x period of time. In the stock game the distance is always between 75 and 150 miles. It doesn't tell you which, so draw a 75mm radius and stay inside. Usually the time is 48 hours but not always. Mission text is bad about giving you the parameters. So get to the position. Draw a 75 mile radius circle around the point. Stay inside until the star turns gray. When it turns gray you have your $200 for passing GO and can move on to the next mission. Failure to complete a mission means next mission you are assigned with be the same darned one! Completing missions is the prime strategy of SH4--don't do it and you don't accumulate enough renown to keep your command. |

TMO is a lot more specific thank goodness. |
It's odd that I was able to complete missions before....except this one in the Luzon Straights. This the reason why I considered it a bug. All the other missions I completed in the well over 10 years I've been playing the many versions of this game, the missions stars would turn grey as mentioned. Again, I thought it was just a bug for the Luzon Straight mission specifically.
FYI...I was on another subsim forum many years ago. Discussed many of the mods you have here. I can't remember the name of the that forum anymore, so I do appreciate the warm welcome and advice. |

:Kaleun_Salute: Could it have been the Ubisoft forum you were on? I and several others that were on it are here now. Do you remember, Wolferz, Mwolf (Armistead here), Wernhervontrapp (not here), realoldfart (not here), donna, acktungbby? There are others, but I can't think of them right now. :06: |
When I played, I parked right on top of the star and stayed there until it turned gray. Free to do as I please after that.

Taking the advice from here, I've stayed within 75nm of the mission star, still hasn't turned grey. Weird that I had them turn grey as soon as I reached them before, or perhaps that was the glitch? Question about the 48hr requirement, this time out I no more then "passed over" the mission star when I ran into the convey I mentioned in my first post. After being chased by the destroyer escort for half a day, I was easily 200 or more miles outside that 75nm requirement. Doesn't this mean I've blown this mission or now that I know about this range and time restriction can I still "recover" this mission? It's not a really big thing, as I did sink an battleship, so I'd do this mission over again for the 200 renoun if necessary.
I don't think it was an official UBI forum. Last time I joined one of those it was for the SH 2 or 3 (remember when they sold German U-boat game separate from the Allied Destroyer game for an online experience....yeah...SPAM by the CV load!!!) |
it's according to the type of mission what the requirements are and the stock game isn't too clear on that sometimes. Some missions are maintain a station for a length of time. Some missions are sink shipping, a certain amount of tonnage. Some missions call on you to take photos or deliver a spy to shore. It's crucial to ID they type of mission requirements you must fulfill and do it.
To muddy the waters further, missions have the option to allow or not allow you to go outside the radius and then return to complete the mission. Of course the stock game doesn't tell you what's expected of you. In practice, just chase the battleship, put it on the bottom and don't worry about it. When you ask for another mission you'll get the same one again and can do it right. Fine trade for a battleship!:yeah: |
I had read here that you had to stay within a 50 NM radius of the star so I zoom in on the star use the compass and draw a 48 NM from the center of the star. That always works for me. 72 Hrs sounds right to me not too sure on that though. If you leave the circle the time starts over again. If it means sinking enemy shipping I will leave the circle
Happy Hunting Can't wait for FALL OF THE RISING SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
We're working on a surprise for this problem, by the way! Shhhhhhh!
|
Update: I was able to complete the mission. Even though I was easily 100nm+ outside the "ring". Game let me "complete" the mission after 48hrs on station. Then turned around and gave me the same mission again with different long/lat position in that straight. No biggie, it's only Dec 13th 1941 and I'm right smack dab in the middle of Japanese shipping lane with 12 fish ready to go!
