Has Anyone Witnessed the Sinking of the Hood in the Denmark Straight During Game?
If so, please give the date, time and location (grid reference) here so that others may. If not possible, for any reason, please leave a comment to that effect.
I have 06:01 hours, 24th May, 1941 for the sinking time but no grid reference. I have tried following HMS Hood until 03:12 U-Boat time (01:12 local time) but she just disappears. Time to get back to sea. |
I assume you play with GWX.
Here are the references you are searching for this battle : - grid = AD5436 - date and hour = May 24, 1941, at 03:17 I also watched the GWX battle some time ago, but it's not realistic at all. So, i've made a mission that recreates this event, based on historical data. The result is quite impressive ! The Hood is sunk, the Prince of Wales can't launch smoke and thus can't escape, so she's sunk too ! The Prinz Eugen is sometimes sunk, and the Bismark little damaged. Unfortunately, you have to add some special mods that i've created for a realistic scenario. The Hood doesn't explode, but the battle lasts 10 or 15 minutes ! Quote:

Thanks for your reply, Fahnenbohn. Yes, I am using GWX. I will give that time and location a good look over soon :salute:.
I will also give your link another look over when I return. Unfortunately, I am land locked for for the next week or two but will come back to this as it seems to have some promise. :know: |

Sorry for the delay, Fahnenbohn, just got back and had a few things to take care of. I have since tried to locate the Hood by following your grid reference but did not have your xxxx grid installed. I have downloaded it and attempted to install it as per your instructions but it was not visible or I have not installed it correctly:wah: I will have another go at installing it but as I am not sure what I have missed I am not confident of being able to get it working:/\\!! Do you have an image of the navigational map location in case I can't get the mod' to work?

Happy to have news from you. Here is a screenshot of my nav. map and my menu_1024_768.ini file. Do you see the grids at the top of the screen ? It's draggable.

Thanks for the rapid reply, Fahnenbohn. The map was very useful :salute: and I think that I have found the problem that I had getting your mod' to work. Whilst waiting for your response I carefully checked the readme instructions and think that I have found the problem. Your instructions read:
'1. Place gridXXXX.tga in SH3/data/menu/gui' I think that it should read: 1. Place gridXXXX.tga in SH3/data/menu/gui/layout (possibly using \ not / if I was being picky) - Unless there is something else that I missed. If not I hope this is useful to you. Either way, I have it working now and will make good use of it . I have now located the co-ordinates and at precisely 03:10 H.M.S. Hood just disappears. Is that it? Is that all you get in SH3 GWX? All the best, The Professor :know: |
Oh man, you're right ! I've sent a PM to Maik in order he corrects this.
Else, didn't you see any battle between Bismark and Hood ?? |
Nah! Both ships just disappeared - 03:10 according to the boat time (not local time).
Glad I could help. |
Sorry to be a pain but, I have just moved forward to watch the Bismark sinking at what I thought would be the same location and time as the single mission i.e. BE3891 @ 09:00 on 27 May. She stood me up :wah:. Have I the right date/co-ordinates?
|
I have BE5336, 27 MAY, 8:40.

Co-ord's visited and the battle witnessed :yeah:. Many thanks. Just for the hell of it, I could not resist the temptation to return (to BE5336 at 08:00), locate the 4 attacking ships and send them to the bottom , leaving the Bismark to circle anti-clockwise until help could arrive :know:.
Still wish that I could witness the sinking of the HMS Hood, though :-?. |
