SH4 is freezing up my entire PC
Hi all
So, SH4 is freezing my PC solid. After anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours of play, it locks up. My PC is unresponsive in all respects, ~2 seconds of sound loops infinitely, and I am forced to do a hard restart. I played 2 hours of Rainbow Six: Siege, and the PC didn't even blink. Here's my PC: i5 760 @ 3.8GHz 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM EVGA GTX780 Classified SSD OS Drive, 3TB HDD for games etc All my drivers are up to date, and I've just performed rigorous memory diagnostics and prime95 tests to confirm a stable overclock. I've reset all overclocks to stock as well to no improvement. I've tried GFO, I've tried the 4GB patch, I've tried setting the exe to run as admin, all compatibility modes, removed read only of course... no improvement. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? Just lost an hours play because of this, and it's beyond frustrating. |
What exe are you running? Your shortcut should be pointed at SH4.exe, not that two letter monster which supposedly downloads non-existant updates and causes lots of problems.
So check your shortcut. If it's not pointed at SH4.exe, make it that way and it will probably fix you up. |
Do you have any mods installed? If so, could we see the mod list in the order you have them installed. Also, what version of SH4 are you currently using?

Thanks for the responses!

No mods at all, vanilla game, tried with and without GFO. Oh, running Windows 10 as well. edit: I just had a thought- could it be my sound? I do some recording at home so I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. It's late here, but tomorrow I'm going to unplug it and play with no sound as see if it's any more stable. |

I wish I could help you more but sadly i stopped using windows 7 years ago. But one thing id do is completely uninstall directx upgrades you have and reinstall them. You can usually do this by the install/delete program in control panel.
A directx lockup is pretty much the only thing that comes to my mind. |
I am on Win 10 and its been running perfectly for ages now. If using mods, ensure they are innstalled in correct order, see other threads for this.
As I recall, back in days of Win 7, I had loads of 'crashes' but now I would guess at less than 1% of game play; they can still happen, depends on too many factors. Sometimes you will also have to remove saves as corrupted. |
