It's a long way to Tunis. - WitW AAR.
Torch to Tunisia So close yet so far to reach that damned place. http://i.imgur.com/eJZRcel.jpg 1942-1943 General HunterICX of the Alied forces. Mission: asking the Germans and Italians under Rommel nicely to go away. Finally after a brief moment of eyeballing this game as it was being put forth on Sale by matrixgames I bit the bullet and got it got the 310 page hard cover manual and the expansion Operation Torch. Gave the smaller scenarios a couple of tries and am now going to attempt to complete one of the larger Scenarios. As being fresh to the series of Gary Grigsby's most excellent and comlex grand strategy games it'll probably result in a catastrophic disaster but what the heck. If you see me use a term horribly wrong or have any suggestions, strategic or tactical input to give let me know. Briefing http://i.imgur.com/u8S4plU.jpg?1 |
Turn 1 - Air The Airforce status: out of range or just an escort's excuse? http://i.imgur.com/rqg3R3V.jpg First thing first the objectives of this Operation: http://i.imgur.com/1kUYvdK.jpg?1 From left to right: Bizerte, Tunis, Sousse, Sdid Bouzid, Sfax, Gabes, Tripoli, El Algheila, Benghazi and Tobruk Right so the Air Directives are set as followed: http://i.imgur.com/5UkFr7u.jpg?1 Tactical Air units are set to support ground units while contesting for air superiority. Their bombers will focus heavily on bombing ground targets and interdict the enemy as much as possible. The Strategic Air units will focus on bombing Airfield and ports in order to disrupt their air operations and supplies. Weather http://i.imgur.com/1jKbSAn.jpg?1 Bit of rain along the coast but nothing serious that'll interupt our air operations. The Directives that where planned for this turn. West: http://i.imgur.com/UipIhD6.jpg?1 Issues: The 12th US Airforce, RAF Eastern and Malta command report that they do not have the aircraft available that are in range to perform recon and challenge the germans for air superiorty. transfer to airfields located closer to the front will be required (which I hope the AI Air management will do as I gave it order to do so) East: http://i.imgur.com/cy2V6Yh.jpg?1 ''Sir, I would like to report that ehm...'' Ow...bollocks just like on the West most of the superiority flights and apart from one recon flight they wont be flown due lack of aircraft being in range. However this didn't spell a total disaster for my bombers as about most would enjoy some sort of escort, just half the way in most cases but that's better then nothing at all right? Well at least when they did fly escort for the bombers they did their job and protected the bombers however we need to have a bit of a talk about their skills to shoot down enemy fighters. http://i.imgur.com/XOghV0Q.jpg?1 Results: http://i.imgur.com/zq7LL7X.jpg?1 Overall not bad for a start where half my airforce doesn't find itself within range of the area of operations (hopefully this will be sorted soon) |

Turn 1 - Ground British X Corps moving West http://i.imgur.com/EcmKyGY.jpg Logistics: Code:
http://i.imgur.com/Qwr43by.jpg?1 The British X Corps under Herbert Lumsden will be dashing along the coast towards the West clearing Libya of the Axis forces and finally meet up with the Allied forced that have landed in the West. The British XXX Corps will follow suit and consolidate the progress the X corps makes. At Bardia the British ran into the Italians and where quickly delt with before Tea break. http://i.imgur.com/AH8jidx.jpg?1 After Bardia it was Tobruk that got cleared from the Italians which routed and managed to escape before they where completly surrounded by our troops. http://i.imgur.com/yuQOx7v.jpg?1 (whilst doing quite a number on our tanks...:shifty:) Situation at the end of turn: http://i.imgur.com/FYCstiO.jpg?1 West: New reinforcements and units are becomming available each week and have to be put into position before we can even think about striking at the Axis forces that occupy Tunis. So far it'll be the Free French XIX Corps that'll take the task of defending the southern part of the Medjerda Mountains keeping the railway and airfields open for us to use whilst the British V and US II Corps will assemble their units further south of them, once on strenght they'll begin their assault which will swing towards the coast upwards to Tunis. http://i.imgur.com/CmJ2s0S.jpg?2 Worst case scenario would be that it'll get bogged down and not get anywhere which mean we'll have to wait for the British X Corps to come all the way from Libya. Losses: Inflicted some damage for minimal costs. http://i.imgur.com/3mw4Hak.jpg?1 |
Turn 2 - Air. Flying a Z.1007 Bis Alcione and you're gonna have a bad time. http://i.imgur.com/NaKSMZI.jpg Seems slowly but surely more flights are made available to perform the missions the directive have set out to do. Got some recon in the West and more in the East. Weather: http://i.imgur.com/hVRWqJv.jpg?1 Very Sunni West: http://i.imgur.com/slMwmWZ.jpg?1Seems the Italians are showing up in the South, thus the air force is to welcome them kindly. East: http://i.imgur.com/7f3vkxE.jpg?2 Business as usually, scout ahead, disturb the pasta eaters so the army can capture the next couple of airfields before going for Benghazi. Losses: http://i.imgur.com/fIMV4cD.jpg?1 Doing pretty good, especially doing a number on those Z.1007 Bis not that it is hard to do so as they basically crash themselves. |
Turn 2 - Ground. Drive a M13/40 and the French are gonna have a bad time. http://i.imgur.com/4Efo5lr.jpg Logistics: Code:
Logistic Phase Event Log The British X corps added the 8th Armored Brigade to it's forces which recently arrived. Moving forward they attacked the Italians who had routed from Tobruk at Dernia and this time forced them to surrender and the British captured the airfield. http://i.imgur.com/MTv4Cf6.jpg?1 Another week and another advance further to the West for the British X Corps. http://i.imgur.com/ojCiQDc.jpg?2 West: http://i.imgur.com/c3VO3Sx.jpg?1 Nothing much to report then that the V Corps and US II Corps are still in progress of assembling their forces. However a Free French brigade who had been moved forward was send back when they got attacked by a combined force of Italians and Germans on Nov 24. http://i.imgur.com/jT5DK6o.jpg?1 Losses: http://i.imgur.com/hQyxvsd.jpg?1 Still doing a good number but I wonder if I'll be keep doing that when I go head to head against the German Afrika Korps instead of Italian Garrison units. |
Unless the AI shakes things around, you shouldn't face too much of Rommels units in the drive to Tunis, however he will appear around the road to Benghazi. Right now, he's probably around Benghazi, looking to retreat westward to an advantagous point.
What you're going to smash into before Tunis are Italians and the odd German forces, until the reinforcements arrive in December and then you'll face the 5. Panzerarmee who brought Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501 with it, which means.... http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/TIGE...01_Afrika2.jpg http://joelevi.com/files/pocketnow/game-over-man.gif |

Turn 3 - Air. Eastern RAF/USAF Status: http://i.imgur.com/iRHp2TB.gif Perhaps if I threaten to take away their tea and for the Americans their Milk and Cookies perhaps then they'll do what I order through the AI management of airbase transfer :stare: Weather: http://i.imgur.com/HLUR2hg.jpg?1 Seems the Western Airforces will be enjoying the ability to fry eggs on their fuselages. West: http://i.imgur.com/k01oPtJ.jpg?1 With getting a clearer picture of the Axis forces as they move in the Western Air Forces adjust their missions accordingly. Hopefully it'll be enough to support the Free French forces in the North, if not I'll be adding a few missions which are more concentrated on a smaller area of operation. East: All planned missions give me this http://i.imgur.com/6VP39J8.jpg?1 Brilliant! :damn: Note: No Free Milage. http://i.imgur.com/KeodCTN.png Well I did read that this AI manage button has to be either pressed each turn if you wish to put the Aircaft in forward bases or every so turn...I was planning to do once every 2 turns but I guess I'll just ram that button every turn. Losses: http://i.imgur.com/MY6fhfe.jpg?1 What did fly in the West performed pretty well, even a sortie reported to have shot down 7 enemy fighters. |
Turn 3 - Ground. Motorized Italian 101st 'Trieste' Division retreats http://i.imgur.com/fIQsEOw.jpg Logistics: Code:
Logistic Phase Event Log The British X Corps continues in advance running into a Italian Motorized division known as the 101st 'Trieste'. The first battle forces them to pull back but when attacked again shortly after by our armored divisions they where forced to route driving them far away from the port of Tolemaide. http://i.imgur.com/EC07i0a.jpg?1 West: Nothing much to report apart from that everything goes as planned and the assembly of the forces continue. http://i.imgur.com/dWmEOjM.jpg?3 Losses: http://i.imgur.com/UBYCKTI.jpg?1 |

It'll have to do...as the 17 PDR AT guns won't go into service till Feb/March '43 iirc :wah:

Turn 4 - Air. Eastern RAF/USAF Status: http://i.imgur.com/T6GQ4eS.jpg Seems that the ground crew has issues transfering bases at the same time the aircraft do..I'll have to plan these things better in advance :shifty: Weather: http://i.imgur.com/Sh0qvFj.jpg?1 It rains pretty much everywhere. West: The Missions for the West where similar to the previous turn but there where less enemy encounters probably due the rain. East: It seems I'm starting to understand the game's mechanics when it comes to transfering...in short plan it ahead and move the ground crew forward before ordering a transfer :know: Losses: http://i.imgur.com/GgJv8VP.jpg?1 |
Turn 4 - Ground. Benghazi http://i.imgur.com/AnpkdIL.jpg?1 Logistics: Code:
STRATEGIC BOMBING DAMAGE The British X corps finally reaches Benghazi some initial probing has been executed by the Motorized NZ division with support of the armored division but a bigger more organized effort will be required to dislodge the Italian defenders from the city. http://i.imgur.com/2DphuuJ.jpg?2 West: The British V Corps got into a bit of action this week when it had been ordered to attack the German 5th Panzer Army which had gotten to close for comfort and threatened our units with most of the forces of the British V Corps assembled this might mean as we managed to push them back that'll we execute our move with the II US Corps in support. http://i.imgur.com/SZIZgLp.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/LCNhZoV.jpg?1 Losses: http://i.imgur.com/kZmJNsE.jpg |
